The forum's gone a bit quiet this last week so let's start some discussion (although let's try too keep it not too heated): which are, in your opinion, the 5 most overrated bands or solo artists in music history? Make a ranking from 5 to 1 (being 1 the most overrated of them all), preferently giving reasons as for why you do consider those artists have received much more recognition and are far more acclaimed than they deserve.

1- AC/DC ...Bar band that got lucky. HATE Brian Johnson's voice.
2- KISS...Gimmicky, bad songwriting, terrible singing. A band that floated by on their image alone.
3 - Dave Matthews Band...I cannot stand his voice, and the endless noodling on the songs. Borrrrriiiinnngg......
4 - Ozzy Osbourne....CANNOT SING! Another one who got by on his gimmick alone.
5 - Grateful Dead...OMG how I hate them. If 30 minute long songs with no melodic structure are your thing, then hey, enjoy it.

I can't think of five artists, but for me there is one band which I just can't get my head around and that is U2. Why oh why are they rated so highly, they are rubbish

Well, I have to say that strangely enough I agree with all of the artists listed by 88keys, specially Dave Matthews. My list would be: 5. Fleetwood Mac: Stevie Nicks ruined what was a decent blues band. Ever since she and her goat-voice came, their music was lacking in inspiration and sucked. 4. Led Zeppelin: proof of what good marketing, looking and behaving like a rockstar can do. They were good with their instruments but mostly worthless as songwriters. Except for a couple of songs, their music is much more basic than what most people think. Also, heavy plagiarizers. 3. Queen: music from musicals. Listening to their songs feels like listening to "The Sound of Music" with an electric guitar. And Freddie Mercury was an amazing singer, but in no way a musical genius. 2. The Doors: I'll steal one phrase that defines them very much: " We all know it's more about the legend than the music with the Doors, so let's just focus on that". Music = zero. 1. Pink Floyd: I still don't get how that flat, plane, dull, unexpressive, hyper boring, emotionless music can be regarded as something exquisite and of genius. There's not even one song from them I like. Overrated as hell.

1.Nirvana:I don't get all of the angst. 2.Lynryd Skynyrd: Swamp people who made it big. 3.Eminem : White boy who thinks he's black. Give it up, Marshall. 4.Guns & Roses: Axl Rose is unequivocally the worst singer in the history of rock and pop music. 5.Kid Rock: He seems like a trailer park hillbilly who got lucky. LOL.

Looks like the main criteria here is the band has to be BIG in the first place, OK I'm with it.
Most overrated first:
1. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - yeah we are so cool cos our songs are mainly about sex even though we sound totally shite.
2. U2 - i had 20 years of my generation telling me they were the best. Finally they seem to be getting their comeuppance.
3. The Doors - a couple of 'worthwhile songs' the rest just plain Jane.
4. Coldplay - i just dont get it.
5. Craig David - is actually my most hated artist but even though he got big he wasnt as big as the above. Just pure and utter garbage.

Buttler, there's no need to if you don't want to, but I would be interested in knowing why you chose those bands (I swear that I hadn't seen your list when I posted mine, because 2 of those artists coincide). Hello my friend, I will answer your question later.

Many, many, many.
U2, Coldplay, REM, and Nirvana have all been mentioned - while these bands may be good (someone obviously likes them!) I can't understand how or why they have achieved world domination. I mean, none of them are exceptional or anything. Sorry if anyone loves them but they're all a bit too bland for me.
My list of five is -
Paolo Nutini - seems like style over substance. Katherine Jenkins - Some people believe she is an opera singer, have these people never heard of Covent Garden or the Met? One Direction - brainwashing small children Lady Gaga - why doesn't she just go away and come back as a performance artist. Rihanna - I'm not sure she has a personality, just a producer, choreographer and a lot of superficial gloss.

Good question, Herr Helmünchausen! I'll have go the shallow route and name some apparent sacred cows (that haven't been listed) off the top of my head without thinking too deeply:
Bruce Springsteen Sex Pistols Bob Marley John Lennon solo Stevie Wonder
... and all Rappers who pathologically sample other people's music to make up for their own lack of music creativity, even though they're by no means sacred cows.
It's sort of odd that the likes of KISS and Eminem have been named as being overrated. I'm pretty sure that both acts have been considered jokes since shortly after they made it big in their respective eras, rightly or wrongly.

2.Lynryd Skynyrd: Swamp people who made it big. You didn't happen to jump for joy when half of the band perished in the swamp, did you?
