Thankfully, I did finally get to see Lou perform a couple of years ago with The Orchestra. But I wish I could go back in time and watch him conduct a 40 piece orchestra. Here's the man in his element with the The English Pops Orchestra.
In ELO's glory days, Lou toiled in the shadows hiding his true talents. Alone in front of an Orchestra, wearing his trademark White tails, I'm reminded of a movie scene where Gandalf the Grey returns as Gandalf the White. A Creation God, indeed. Lou the man, the myth, the all powerful wizard of rock orchestration.
here's a little explanation of that character - just mentally insert Louis each time Gandalf is mentioned.
<< To first understand what makes Gandalf the Grey different from Gandalf the White, it’s important to know Gandalf's true identity. Although he walked Middle-earth as an old man, his origins were far more divine. He was, in fact, one of the Maiar – a race of beings who assisted the creation of Arda (Earth) and held incredible power. He was essentially a divine emissary sent by the Valar (creation gods) to help Middle-earth fight the trilogy’s main villain, Sauron. Despite his background, Gandalf the Grey chose to roam Middle-earth in battered grey robes, never flaunting his real powers. For hundreds of years, he befriended elves, dwarves, and hobbits alike, learning and sharing knowledge. But he also spent that time gathering information on Sauron’s return and, later, played a vital part in finding the One Ring – which was in the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, and then passed to his nephew, Frodo. >>

RIP Louis. I guess I'd forgotten that he'd done string arrangements on the Jeff-produced songs A Love So Beautiful, and California Blue from Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl album.

Really sad to hear about Lou's passing. It's difficult to overestimate his contribution to the ELO sound during those 'peak' years. I really hope that Jeff acknowledges that contribution in the next few days.
Is it really nearly 40 years since I first saw him on the Time Tour? And then again at Heartbeat '86 five years later. I also had the privilege of seeing Part II/Orchestra 14 times over the years, including that memorable evening with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra back in 1991.
Always quiet and unassuming but what a stellar contribution he's made. Never to be forgotten....

An announcement from Mik Kaminski, Eric Troyer, Parthenon Huxley, Gordon Townsend, Glen Burtnik, Louis Clark Jr. and Cliff Hillis:
All the members of The Orchestra are saddened to announce the passing of Lou Clark, Sr. on Saturday, Feb 13. Lou was our quiet brother, a soft-spoken man who loved a good joke and a hearty glass of wine. He was a genius string arranger and composer, one of the best ever. His string arrangements will live on in our performances post-pandemic, and on all the amazing recordings to which he contributed. Lou’s music will be a living, breathing testament to his greatness. Of course, Lou would never have referred to his work as anything more than just something he liked to do. He was modest to a fault. We will miss him terribly.

Thinking of Louis's family, band mates and all who worked with him and sending condolences - they will be feeling his loss even more than we are. Must agree with nickheynes, he added something to ELO that nobody else could and helped polish that unique sound. His many other successful projects will be his lasting legacy. He seemed to be an all round good bloke who wore his considerable talent quietly, and was much loved by all who knew him - RIP Louis

Any statement coming from Jeff's camp? I’ve not seen anything yet, I did message the contact I have in “Team Jeff” this morning suggesting some comment on their social media outlets would be appreciated by the fans....I’ve not as yet received a reply.

Mr. Clark was supremely talented and was a huge part of the success of my favourite band. I thank him for his work on the songs that I have enjoyed for years.

I would have left it to their own initiative. I don't want to see Team Jeff making a comment because they received pressure by the fans, I would rather sit back and see if they spontaneously come up with something or if they (and he) care so little about it they don't feel it deserves a mention. That would tell us more about the way he feels about it than a statement made out of compromise because the fans asked them to.
