Sorry if this seems rude. But it amazes me that people record some of this stuff and then put it online. That Without Someone cover is dreadful. Unless the musicality is top rate covers should be for self indulgence only. Really? I think it's amazing. He captured the feel of the original song. My covers versions are a mixed bag, some are better than others, some suck big time, others I'm extremely proud off. We are just amateurs after all. I love that Jeff has influence so many people to re-record his work. Regardless of ability or talent.

tedblight I agree with much of what you've said here. I have not heard all of your covers yet, but I have enjoyed the songs and videos that I have heard and seen so far. I am very impressed with the obvious dedication and love you that have put into each one. Keep up the good work!

Sorry but i fail to see the point of recording and effectively publishing something that isn't absolutely top quality. I guess we'll agree to disagree

Unless the musicality is top rate covers should be for self indulgence only. Personally I'm not too prone on doing Jeff Lynne covers either, that's why if I'm going to record a song I prefer to go for my own original music: even if it sucks and no one gives a damn about it, it's the best version there is of it. You won't have anyone else or, what's worse, yourself comparing your modestly home-made version to the original, made by one of the best musicians in the world in a studio where every single element is several thousand dollars expensive and with an army of experts giving him advice and hiding his failures with state-of-the-art musical software. But then I can't deny as a listener I have enjoyed the covers Tedblight and other forum members have done of Jeff Lynne songs. I don't need a cover to be perfect, for me the most important thing, as others said before, is that you add something of your own to it, a bit of a different feel. When that happens -and of course a minimal basic standard of quality is met- you often find yourself rediscovering the beauty of the song through a cover.

Sorry but i fail to see the point of recording and effectively publishing something that isn't absolutely top quality. I guess we'll agree to disagree jackpunch, do you play any instrument? Yep. Tuba, Euphonium both pretty well. Guitar decent rhythm player, awful lead and Piano...badly. To my ear if it's out of tune, out of time, has dead notes, duff notes...dont bother. Just do it until its right. I used to play in a covers band but left after the lead guitarist pointed out to me that 95% of the audience don't hear the occasional bum note or something thats slightly out of tune. Unfortunately, I do.

His guitar playing is appalling. There's a thread on the Steve Hoffman forum which has managed to isolate some of his playing at the RRHoF. It's just slightly better than beginners standard quite honestly

Unfortunately, I do. Man, you are a perfectionist! Well, I was going to ask you if you ever get together with other people (for example friends) and jam. I do. I have musician friends with whom I get together to drink and jam. We mix classics with some of our own stuff and others that we improvise on the run, with someone proposing a chords sequence or indicating the chords to the others. Does it sound perfect? No. At times people don't remember how the chords went, at times you mishit a note or others an improvised solo doesn't come out well, at times one guy doesn't remember when to cut and he goes on playing while all of the others stop... And it even gets further away from perfection when at one point we switch instruments, so we typically end up playing things we are not the best at (at times I end up playing piano, bass or percussion), but switching instruments at one point makes it even more fun and interesting for us. And let me tell you, even not achieving perfection I enjoy those jam sessions like crazy, as everyone else does. You get to try lots of new stuff, learn from others and at times when something comes out well it gives you get the chills. And if you are missing out on things like that because you want all the music that goes through your ears to be perfect, I think you must be enjoying music far less than I or any of the people who can live with non-perfection do. So why not give a try to relaxing your perfectionism a bit? I think it might be worthy.

Getting together with mates and playing and having a laugh is what music is about. I've been all over the world (pardon the pun) with bands and orchestras and the reward of hours of hard practice (and I mean hours and hours of going over the same few bars just to make sure it's spot on) is worth it when you put in a quality performance in a concert. Putting stuff out into the public domain that is simply average at best and drivel at worst is frankly in my view self indulgent. Sorry if that comes across as churlish and downright rude.

No need to apologise... self indulgent, I’m not sure what you mean?! BTW, my album is on iTunes, check it out (Jeff gets the royalties too) Dead End Street - EP by Mark Dodsworth 🤣😂🤣

No, it didn't come across as rude to me. It's your own opinion and your own way of living music.
