Sorry if this seems rude. But it amazes me that people record some of this stuff and then put it online. That Without Someone cover is dreadful. Unless the musicality is top rate covers should be for self indulgence only. I wouldn't call it dreadful,ok it's not the best cover in the world but it's certainly not the worst. Even though I produce my own covers/versions of others, I've got to admit that I use to do it rather as a warm up/rehearsal/keeping in musical shape/amusement than as a goal in itself. Actually, it is extremely unfrequent that I like a cover/versión better than the original. Regarding that "Without Someone", certainly I wouldn't use dreadful either. It is properly performed, and maybe the adjective is a bit too minimalistic, or simplistic, and in my opinion lacking the attractive somber atmosphere transmitted by the BoP original.

Here's a young Korean guy performing "Midnight Blue" live.
I think it's a brilliant version of the song, see what you think.

I love this! It's funky. It's a most refreshing take on the song! Very Stevie Wonder- ish! with some Prince in the bargain.

I love his confidence and serenity! A very strong voice. Also a nice touch giving the bridge to the lovely backup singers!😎

Here is another cover from the brilliant double cd tribute to the music of Jeff Lynne that is "Lynne Me Your Ears".
The cd was released in 2001, I managed to get one in Leeds many years ago. If you can locate it, buy it, you'll love it.
Here's "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" by Doug Powell.

Oh yeah that's a sweet rendition of that song! I like the backward guitars at the intro- that's really hard to get right and a new twist on the song. The vocals are melodic and free. I also dig how the bass comes in strong on the third verse after the solo. It brings to mind some of Lynne's later work - like how the song might have been produced in the Secret Messages sessions.

Big world- room for everybody!

I must admit that this is one of my least favorite ELO songs, but the young man is very talented and does a beautiful job of singing it!

If you want a quick laff...... Google "Don't Bring Me Down drum cover". There a LOTS of videos of people (drummists) playing the drumline from DBMD(presumably cause they can), generally with the real ELO song going in the background. God bless the cotton sox of anyone who seeks to keep the ELO sound alive by posting a cover; BUT Don't these people realise that it's a drumloop (the predecessor to the drum machine)? I love DBMD - believe me I do; but all these drum cover vids are SO BORING to watch - some of them almost nod off! No offence intended (well not much).

Was it Lennon and McCartney who once stated that they don't mind anyone covering their songs as long as they do it in an original way. Apparently they loved Peter Sellers doing 'Hard Days Night' simply because it's so different...

I always felt that if you are going to cover a song it either has to be better than the original or completely different. The only time you could get away with this is by copying it many years after it was released eg Doctor and the Medics "Spirit in the Sky" was almost the same as Norman Greenbaum's original, however with almost 30 years between the 2 versions, it brought the song to a new generation, who didn't know the original and subsequently got it to number 1. If anybody therefore wants to cover ELOor Jeff Lynne's songs then suggest you either make it different to the original or cover the not so well known songs

Here is Elmer Goodbody Jnr's 1976 version of "Do Ya".
Elmer Goodbody Jnr was actually Mike Sheridan, Roy Wood's former boss in the Nightriders. Assisting Mike on this record are ex-Wizzard members :- Rick Price, Bob Brady, Nick Pentelow, Keith Smart and Charlie Grima.
