It's not really anything special, in fact just like the other love songs on Discovery (Need her love, Wishing, Midnight Blue) it boarders on saccharine

Buttler, another very interesting harmony feature it has: just when the chorus start ("I-I will..."), instead of jumping from the root note (F) to the III grade (A minor), it stays in the F and inverts only the bass note to A (making an F/A), and that's when the voice makes that slide upwards. That's awesome too.

Sorry but I don't agree with you at all. " Midnight Blue" is one of my ELO fav songs along with " Discovery", which is one of their best albums " Last Train to London", " Don't Bring Me Down", " Confusion", " Shine A Little Love", I would never say " Discovery is their second worst album", but to each his own, I suppose But hey, this is only my opinion Fair enough - but in my opinion the album is afflicted by that late seventies musical disease otherwise know as disco. The only tracks I really like are Horace Wimp & Don't Bring Me Down. I've problems with ELO's "disco" phase as well. Hanging out on this site, reading others comments about that time good or bad, kept me giving it a chance. I need remember most of the forum became fans during that era. So, I sucked it up and ordered Light Years – Very Best Of ELO. I’ve written elsewhere it’s jarring hearing a disco song after a classic (what I consider a classic). The best thing is learning to appreciate all of ELO’s phases. There are songs I shake my head at and cry for mercy! Xanadu being one of them. I’d no clue what a Xanadu was! And it’s Jeff’s only number one hit!!!
Thankfulness discovering All Over the World is due.

I'm not a fan of disco either, but how many disco songs does "Discovery" have? 2? "Shine a little love" and "Last Train to London"? OK, let's add "Wishing" if you want, that would make it 3 out of 9 -10 if you include bonus tracks-. Is it enough to ruin the album so badly?

My album has not seen the light of day in years. I don't know what is on it off hand. Sigh... Guess I'll give it a spin later.

Disco is OK as long as it's done with care, I used to hate it with a passion when it first came out but looking back some of it is alright. For instance Nile Rogers and especially Bernard Edwards were really accomplished musicians and their stuff has stood the test of time. The most popular music at any point in time is usually danceable stuff in some format because it appeals to the common herd, look at Jive Bunny going to No. 1, urgh! And all that Stock Aitken and Waterman output, total formula.
You can't blame Jeff for having a go at it, and Shine a Little Love and Last Train to London are more or less viewed as classics these days so he is up there with the good 'uns. He was just having a bit of fun.
As I often loftily (and probably very annoyingly) quote, there's only two sorts of music, good and bad. Even Midnight Blue is a billion times better than any of that generic X Factor rubbish.

I've heard Tom Petty talk shit about disco music and I thought "either he has never listened to 'Discovery' or he hasn't got his friend Jeff Lynne in his mind as he speaks".

It is a masterpiece! !!! I absolutely adore it and it was a Gem on the album! Finally someone! Never fear, Helmut! I think we've already discussed our mutual love for this song... But I'll say it again. It's one of my all time favorites. Yes, a little cheesy like people have been saying but that never bothered me. And I love the sound of that guitar!!!

Thankfulness discovering All Over the World is due. I just tend to look upon Discovery & Xanadu as a blip in an otherwise consistenly good run of albums. Yes, both of them have a couple of listenable tracks, but unlike other albums they are stuffed with turkeys (seasonal ref intended!).

It wouldn't ruin the album if the other tracks were up to the usual standard - and as I've already mentioned I think there are only two decent ones.

Oh, my musical alter ego Elophile, I should have known I can count on you when it comes to backing some songs that don't receive much love from the public. I remember "Jungle" and "Summer and Lightning" being on that list too.
