Ok ok, let me say right away that AHB isn't in the same league as Hello My Old Friend but come on guys, cut this track a bit of slack. It is what it is,an album track that fits the narrative of the album perfectly, bleak and sad at times and melancholy too, just like the guy who has been transported into the future and wishing to return home. It's not Jeffs finest but it's on his finest album....

"finest album" - not willing to go there, but it's in the top 5 ELO albums
for those who want to give the song a fresh listen

I absolutely love Time, and I honestly have no problem with AHB in itself. I am just sad that those 3 amazing bonus tracks were left off the album, when, at least to me, AHB would have been a much more obvious choice to cut. If Time had been released originally as a double album, with all of the bonus tracks included, I think I would feel much more warmly towards AHB.

"Julie don't live here" is the song that I can't believe was left off of TIME.

orioles70Me too! If I had to pick a favorite from the Time sessions, that would be it. I can't believe that it wasn't a single, let alone that it was left off the album.

"Julie don't live here" is the song that I can't believe was left off of TIME. I can't see anyone listening to that one and not singing along.

I actually do like "Another Heart Breaks." It's bleak and slow and monotonous, and it expresses the heaviness and despair of the character's plight. I also don't mind "Letter from Spain" for the same reason. There's clearly a numbness and emotional emptiness in the singing that speaks volumes. In their own dark, haunting way, they both work, at least for me. I like sad songs, though...

"Julie don't live here" is the song that I can't believe was left off of TIME. "Julie don't live here" is a 9.5/10 for me but "The Bouncer" is a 10. If I'd had to pick one out of the 3 bonus tracks it would be "The Bouncer" by a small margin. Besides, it features one of Jeff's most passionate vocal performances. But, being both calm, slow songs, the natural replacement for ATH would have been "When time stood still".

I agree that 'JDLHA' 'The Bouncer' and 'WTSS' are great songs but I don't think they would have sat well in the place of AHB in the context of the albums storytelling.

Well, a song that says nothing at all will certainly not contradict the narrative of the album -or any other narrative, for that matter.

Another Heart Breaks is probably my least favourite song on what is a fantastic album but I still like it a lot. Did you all know its sampled on a hit single? The song Sunrise by Goldenscan got to number 52 in the UK in 2000. They speeded it up quite a bit to turn it into something you could dance to. It got played a few times on the Friday and Saturday night Radio 1 dance music shows.

I never knew that! not a big fan of dance type music though so I wouldn't have listened to this back in the day.

nope nope nope nope ...starts poorly then doesnt go anywhere... it is a crime when time stood still was left off ShardEnder has explained why "When Time Stood Still" was left off the Time album. The non technical explanation is the song didn't track properly in the inmost placement. I recall the esses were sibilant, but I hope ShardEnder will correct me if I'm wrong. Jeff's solution--write and record a whole new instrumental that contained no esses.

Another Heart Breaks is not a good song. It's a type of song that works in the background. It's there, but it's not. Yet you can't help perk your ears.
