Today is Juneteenth, whose name is taken from its date: June 19, 1863, the commemoration of the announcement of the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas and other Confederate states that had not been enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation which had been in effect since Jan. 1, 1863. It is recognized as either an official or a ceremonial holiday in 46 of the 50 US states. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juneteenth

Is there any particular celebration or traditional act that people do, eloneen? Thankfully Argentina never had slavery.

Helmut83 There are often local community celebrations with an emphasis on African American history, African traditions, various forms of artistic expression, reading of the Emancipation Proclamation and the order in Texas from June 19, and discussions about current issues facing African Americans. Sometimes there are religious services of remembrance and thanksgiving. In NC, these celebrations take various forms and are sometimes organized by local communities, and at various African American historical sites and in some churches across the state. It's often a family event. It's not widely observed by people who are not African Americans, and even many African Americans do not observe it because there is not a day off from work or anything like that. Sadly, a lot of people know nothing about it. I have visited various historical sites for celebrations with my family in the past, or attended a street festival, etc., but today I worked at my summer job, did a few of my regular weekly activities, read something about Juneteenth this evening, and did a lot of reflection about where we are now and where we've come from ..more of a remembrance than a celebration this time.

If ever we start a new thread called "Embarrassing Moments While Listening to ELO", here's my contribution. This happened earlier this afternoon. I was walking back from the supermarket, shopping bag on arm and iPod firmly attached to ears. The song Starlight by ELO was playing as I floated along, head somewhere in outer space. Suddenly, just at the moment where Jeff sings "Stop!", I tripped up and narrowly avoided falling flat on my face. Choreographed to perfection. Jolted out of my reverie, I righted myself and walked on, to the sound of Jeff advising: "Keep your feet on the ground, little girl".

She sings more in tune than my mom! I love when they finish doing it and go back to the pool like "enough of this nonesense".

Last week, we were having problems with the light controls in the office space that I was sharing with a colleague on my summer job. The lights, which were supposed to be controlled by motion sensors, would gradually dim over time until they were completely off, no matter what we did. We were trying to explain to the person who came to look at it what the problem was, and I wanted to say "And when I turn around, the lights go down."
