I've kept my mouth shut about this for a long time...worried that any discussion might end up hurting someone. Then today I actually bothered to look up the info on the kid's song "It's Raining, It's Pouring" - as quoted (musically) by JL on "Rain Is Falling" (Time). 'A tisket, a tasket' has the same tune.
Some of you will remember a huge hit from the 80's called "Down Under", written by Colin Hayes and performed by his group Men At Work ("I come from a land down under, where women blow & men chunder..."). During the song, the flautist (Greg Ham) quotes a very old kid's song "Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum Tree" during his riff. The song was a big hit right around the world.
Many years later (in about 2009) the copyright holders of 'Kookaburra' finally twigged (as a result of a question on an Oz TV quiz show)....and sued. The payout was substantial and ruined the lives of many associated with the band. Greg Ham committed suicide.
Anyhow; I have always worried that JL might face a similar problem with 'Rain'; but it turns out that the kid's tune he quotes is IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN i.e. no copyright.
Phew!
(If you have any more like this, probably best to keep them to yourselves until you've checked the rights situation.)
'Frere Jacques' from "Hello My Old Friend" is public, too......

What about "Rain Rain go Away Come Again Another Day" from the same song. Not sure about the rights for that, but so many people have covered it - it must be safe. BTW HW, the smiley thread icons (in the starting a thread page) are playing up again.

Speaking of which, does anyone know an active Supertramp forum? I've got some questions about Paris that I need answers to.

Jeff sings a few seconds of 'Hey Jude' in 'Shangria' from ANWR, does that cause copyright issues ?

There's also "First Movement (Jumping Biz) from the first ELO album. Roy Wood has admitted that he basically sampled the bells from classical gas.

I'd say he was "inspired" by a lot more than the bells from Classical Gas, the two songs are mightily similar all over.

I'd be more preoccupied with Ma-Ma-Ma Belle, Across the Border, The Way Life's Meant to Be and 21st Century Man.
