Maybe I'm insensitive to these things, but I don't think they're copies, any of them. Sure, you can find similarities - and certainly "inspiration" - but I think Jeff's songs are distinct works in their own right.

I've always thought of The Way Life's Meant To Be as an evolution of the same basic melody as Across The Border, which is definitely indebted to Heroes And Villains by The Beach Boys.
Similarly, another example in the ELO catalogue that I don't think has yet been mentioned is the progression from Tears In Your Life to After All, Sirens and Night Calls before Jeff went full circle and finally completed Tears In Your Life. These owe their existence to Chopin's Prelude Op. 28 No. 4, which Jeff learned to play at some point between the Time Tour ending and the main batch of sessions for Secret Messages commencing in order to improve his piano skills (or so I've been told).

Yes, The Way Life's Meant to Be is nothing but a reformulation of Across the Border, which itself is a plagiarism of Heroes and Villians (yes, plagiarism, though I don't believe intentional). H&V is one of The Beach Boys trademarks, one of Brian Wilson's finest, and arguably the foundational stone of Smile (in this humble writer's opinion, the best album ever made). What's more, I bet Ticket to the Moon wouldn't exist as we know it if it wasn't for God Only Knows. That canon... So beautiful.

That's great information, ShardEnder. Although I'm a fan of classical, I'm not a fan of Chopin, and I never would have caught the inspiration.

'Summer and Lightning' has a little bit of Steve Miller in it. I'm not sure if that spoils it for me or not because I do like some Steve Miller songs.
