I saw The Upper Crust over the weekend. They're hilarious. They dress up like 18th century aristocrats and sing songs with titles like "Let Them Eat Rock", "Heads Will Roll" and "Rock'n'Roll Butler" The dude to the left has a very Jeff circa Showdown era (but powdered) look going on. Here he is again: Attachment Deleted

The fabulous Angélique Kidjo will be performing a free concert at the NC Museum of Art's outdoor performance area this coming weekend. Lucky us!! The parent of one of my students told me about it at Open House a few weeks ago, but tickets ran out fast, and we were out of luck. It was just announced today that a limited number of tickets were being released. I was able to snag two tickets for me and hubby!! We kind of discovered her music together when we were dating back in the late 1990s, so this will be a fun time for both of us!! Here is the video for my favorite song by her. Makes me want to dance, even though I don't really dance well at all. Love her!

WOW! The A. Kidjo concert was AMAZING! It was a beautiful evening, warm with clear skies for this outdoor concert. It was free, with free parking and free shuttle service from a satellite parking lot... for a multiple Grammy winning singer. That's classy! There were food trucks, and a beer and wine bar with drinks for sale, but outside food was allowed, so we brought along a nice picnic dinner and lawn chairs, and settled into a pretty good lawn location. I had other commitments during the day, so we couldn't get there early enough to get right up front. This concert was the closing performance for NC Museum of Art's 20th anniversary concert season, and the finale for the African arts and cultural festival they organized to celebrate the recent expansion of their African art collection. The opening act was the Senegalese kora player Diali Cissokho, who lives in our area, and who performed with his band Kaira Ba, which he formed with some local musicians here in NC. I traveled to Senegal in 1997, and fell in love back then with the sound of the kora, so I really enjoyed their performance! Ms. Kidjo...What can I say? The voice, the energy, her commitment to human rights, the humorous banter with the musicians and the audience...it was all lovely!! To top it off, jazz great Branford Marsalis (who is from New Orleans, but who now lives in our area) was invited up on stage about two songs into the concert, and he played saxophone with her band for the rest of the show. They've been friends and have worked together for over 20 years, so the musical chemistry was wonderful. Fantastic! It was hard to tell the audience size, but I would guess about 2000-2500 people. There were quite a few families there with kids, and people of all ages from a variety of backgrounds who love her music. Lots of singing along, dancing and LOVE. My pictures are all terrible, and there are no reviews up yet, but here's the link to the concert ad. Way to go, NC Museum of Art! ncartmuseum.org/calendar/event/2017/09/23/outdoor_concert_angelique_kidjo_with_diali_cissokho_and_kaira_ba/1800

I'm off to see "The ELO Experience" tomorrow night, not sure what to expect as I don't usually care for tribute acts, however, "Money for Nothing", the Dire Straits tribute are fantastic, well worth seeing if you can.

I'm going to see Chris Rea at the Hammersmith Apollo next month, I have been a big fan of his since I was given a copy of his debut album for my 21st birthday, and I'm 60 now. He has been so ill in recent years, surviving pancreatic cancer and a stroke, but he keeps on going, and is a fantastic slide guitarist (and he's from the same town as me). It should be a great night, followed by a couple of days Christmas shopping in London, can't wait.

Last week I went with my parents to see the Grumbleweeds. These guys -
They didn't do any ELO stuff in the show but there was a Cher section and a funny karaoke sequence.
In fact, there were only two Grumbleweeds left and only one of those was an original so I guess you can call them the comedy version of Jeff Lynne's ELO. It was quite a good show, very funny. If they have a show near you you could do worse than go and see them. After the show they stood in the foyer and gave out autographs and had time for everybody who wanted it.
My dad is a big fan of the Grumbleweeds and watching him get all excited to meet them gave me a good idea of what the first meeting between Jeff and Roy Orbison would have been like.
