Oh wow, I didn't know they were still going, fantastic! Remember their radio show? With Uncle Nasty and Uncle Rubbish? And the guy in the gasmask? My Mum and I still refer to Chicken in a Gasmask when suggesting tasty eat-out treats

I saw John live about 17 years ago.
You'll have a great time, Horacewimp ! Watch out for his flying shirt buttons though, they could take your eye out if you're at the front!

On Wednesday night I went to see Joe Brown live and it was incredible .
Joe put on a marvellous solo acoustic show with the help of his old friend Henry Gross who used to be in the group Sha Na Na.
It was a great night out I'd recommend to anyone. Such fun. Joe never stopped smiling and both guys on stage were enjoying themselves as much we in the audience were.
Joe played a bit of everything, classics, old singles, covers, all sorts of songs and in-between he told tales of his life, how he started out in music, his family, people he knew and things that had happened to him. I laughed so much at one particular tale I had to wipe tears from my eyes. In fact there was just as much storytelling as there was music which Joe can get away with because he's that kind of bloke. You could listen to him talk for hours. He was just how you expect him to be - very amiable, very chatty, a real crowd pleaser and a genuine star although there was nothing starry about him. He seemed just like someone you'd meet down the pub. If you remember Joe from playing along side Jeff at the Concert for George, he is exactly the same now as he was then.
I don't want to spoil the show for you if you are planning on seeing Joe, but out of all his entertaining tales my favourites were the one about Johnny Cash and a gift that Johnny sent him, the story about writing a song with his friend Roger Cooke in which Roger's Bristol accent plays a part, and the lovely story he used to illustrate what kind of a man George Harrison was.
Other than his guitar, Joe also played ukulele, 5 string banjo and mandolin all of which he had the most excellent skill in. He made his mandolin sing as beautifully as George could make his guitar sing and I was very impressed. I haven't seen many truly great musicians, ones who didn't seem to have to try hard to create magic but Joe is one of those people. When the interval came Joe left the stage looking as if he was ready for a good ol' pint of something nice, a reward for a job well done. I don't know if he had one but there was a running gag about tea through the whole show.
Henry Gross mustn't be forgotten. He supported Joe admirably and provided some great guitar and gorgeous backing vocals. He left Sha Na Na before they played with ELO but he had his own hit with 'Shannon' which he sang beautifully in the second half.
I always think that a truly great concert is one where you can enter the "zone" while you are there. And I certainly did, more than once which is rare. With the songs Joe played, they were just so perfectly performed that you were just sucked into the magic of them. I can't explain properly but I think you'll know what I mean. That moment where a song ends and you are shocked to be back in a room with lots of other people.
Now, I have happy news to tell - I did get to meet Joe! A worker in the venue told us the wrong place to go so there was me, mum a random chap waiting by the wrong gate! After a long time Henry must have spotted us and mum got his autograph, he was a very nice man. She asked about Joe and Henry said he was very tired (no wonder, a fantastic show like that at 75!) but he did come up to the gate and he even said hi to me! (I can't remember what noise I made back but at least I didn't faint). Now, neither of them had to do this. Joe said he'd been signing autographs for the past half hour at the gate at the back - the one we were supposed to have been at - but they both were kind enough to come to see us anyway even though we were in the wrong place. Great blokes.
I think I may be working my way through all the people who played at the Concert for George - Jeff? Tick, Gary Brooker? Tick, Sam Brown? Tick, Joe Brown? Tick. Sadly there will be tick for Tom Petty or Billy Preston but I'll still be looking out for Jools, Paul and Ringo.
The type of show Joe played and the size of the venue is how I'd love to see Jeff one day. Just the great man, his guitar, a friend in support, a few stories and some acoustic songs. I suppose Joe is the only true star I've ever met but he doesn't seem like a star, he has no mystery unlike Jeffrey! You're more likely to buy Joe a pint than fall at his feel as you would with Jeff! I 100% recommend Joe's tour to anybody on this forum. Go and see him live, wait at the (correct) stage door and you will not be disappointed. Here's a list of tour dates - www.ents24.com/uk/tour-dates/joe-brown go and book now! .

What a brilliant write-up queenofthehours, I once vowed never to bother with Joe Brown after he gave a rather nasty review to something ELO had produced, but it seems he is actually quite close to at least Jeff. Kudos to him as well for booking 60+ dates at his advanced age, he is living proof that you are as old as you feel.

queenofthehours, no clue who Joe Brown is, so checked him out on Wikipedia. Did any of his songs chart in the US?

I don't think he charted in the US but in the UK he was a mainstay in the charts in the early 60's.

Great pic! A very underated songsmith in my opinion although he is like marmite (you either like or you hate his 'adaptations') Was Wild Willy there?

No Wild Willy, it was a one man show yesterday didn’t even have his band, just John and his roadie “deadly” who he takes the piss out of.
