The inspiration for this came from listening to the album Time and after stumbling along the track 'Another Heart Breaks" I immediately got sick to death of the monotonous guitar licks and those annoying ping-pong ball sound FX! I really think "When Time Stood Still" should've been a replacement for that track, as it fits in snugly with the story-line. Which begs the question: Are there any ELO songs that would've benefited better being B-Sides? (Alliteration mother-fuppers!)

Completely agree with you about When Time Stood Still being far superior to Another Heart Breaks, what was he thinking?
Off the top of my head I can think of Endless Lies being a candidate for the B Side Bin. Oh dear. Although I suppose it does fit in with the general theory I've read here and there that Balance of Power is all about Jeff breaking up with Sandi (?) I expect he felt a lot better getting that off his chest.

Endless Lies was the B-Side to the So Serious Single, but it should just stick to that!

'The Whale' maybe. I'm sure OOTB wouldn't be any worse for it's removal.

It's a totally daft track, that is true, but it's also an important break in the flow of more conventional ballads and rockers that OOTB is full of.
Next you'll suggesting Jungle has to go...

My choice would have been Time After Time from Secret Messages.
And ironically, Time After Time originally was a B-side, then appeared on the CD cassette and CD.

I guess it was put on the album due to the prospect of 'value for money' (i.e. some poor sod who bought the original CD or cassette release is going to be exposed to this album filler sh*t)

Southerman, Is that Neil?

I thought about that question for several days now and can't imagine a song. And I have to say I love "time after time" as nearly every Jeff song from the 80s.

Discovery's sappy ballads are definitely too much for me (barring Confusion) and should be relegated to the cutting room floor!

"Midnight blue" is the best love song ever made, and "Need her love" is another masterpiece.
The only one you could classify as "ballad" from Discovery that I don't like is "Wishing".

Nothing from Discovery should have been left on the cutting room floor, not even if it was covered with soft pillows to prevent damage. I'd go the oh so controversial route and nominate "The Battle of Marston Moor" if it hadn't been a b-side in the US already.

Personally, the introduction of 'formula rockers' as album closers in the 80s was a very unwelcome development. The fact that two of them became big hits did much to reinforce the impression that ELO had lost its creative edge, IMO. Having said that, I wouldn't relegate Hold On Tight to a B-side, but I certainly would Rock 'n' Roll Is King. As for Send It... well, a B-side might be too good for it

Besides, "Need Her Love" "Midnight Blue" and "Wishing" are just plain saccharine in music form.
