On this song, at least, they were definitely ELO influenced. Yes for sure, I can remember seeing a youtube clip of them doing this live that included the intro to Mr Blue Sky as a lead in.

I can’t say I’m at all surprised about this news. Jeff and Gary do seem to have been very close lately and the newer Take That songs like ‘Shine’ sound particularly ELO influenced. When Take That were at their peak I wasn’t really a big fan. In fact I wasn’t a fan at all but occasionally I’d put one of their posters on my wall. Alternately I had a thing for Gary and Mark and when they split I favoured Gary’s solo career – I had him down as the only true talented one. If I’d known Mr Barlow was such a big fan of Jeff’s I’d have given the boys more time. Yet, in those days, I had no time for Jeff either. My musical tastes lay elsewhere.
The immediate reaction of my 90s teenage mind is:
But the reaction of my 2010s mind is:
I was very cynical when Take That made a comeback but the truth is they have grown from being a boyband to become men with real musical talent. And I have grown up to realise that I was stupid to ignore ELO. That's why I love this news! It would have been unthinkable 20 years ago.
Jeff's working with Take That is absolutely no different from his working with Roy Orbison or George Harrison. TT were really the Beatles of the 90s so it’s absolutely fitting Jeff should play a part.
It would have been nice to have Mr Lynne's own new album first but I'm looking forward eagerly to hearing Jeff's take on Take That.

Dudes I'm a true ELO fan. I'm the one I spose who loves the nasty scratchy cello solo in Ma Ma Bell. The sheers nuttiness of an unknown whacky, bearded, outfit that wrote songs like "the battle of Marston moor" "Nellie" dreaming of 4000 and moved through the '70s with the dawning of the popular ELO everyone knows today, straight through to the 80's albums that we all love. I never followed plastic music like these knobs, just like I didn't follow the bay city rollers, wham or bros or more appropriate boyzone. So I suppose you will have to forgive me for my upset. I don't follow football. ..but this band is my football. So I suppose you guys (my mutual football fans) its a shock to find out some real music fans appreciate plastic music. Its like man u or lfc starting an x factor to find the next George Best or Messi. My album collection doesn't really get past '84 maybe thats my prob. They are sh*t (take skat). Jeff has worked with...well you know...good god does anyone get me? And yes I am a hater.... (of crap polyfilla music).

Well, I have not been into Take That in the early 90s when they were big, in spite of being in the age group they were being marketed at. I couldn't be bothered with them because a "band" of 5 guys, most of who were more dancers than singers, just doesn't count as a band. If they were five instrumentalists, that would have beeen different.
In my MTV days, there was only one Take That song which I liked, and that was "Relight My Fire", mostly due to the mid-song surprise guest appearance of a strong singing voice courtesy of Lulu.
I'm aware that Gary Barlow is their main songwriter and I've heard he is quite good at that. I was somewhat impressed by Mark Owen's catchy solo single "Clementine", having had expected very little. And Robbie Williams' "Angels" turned out to be a really good song, yet his mannerisms and the hype surrounding an entertainer who is not that strong a singer was a bit much throughout the years.
My first and so far only Take That-related CD which I bought was, surprisingly, the "Reality Killed the Video Star" album by Robbie Williams. I got this one because it was produced by Trevor Horn and had his whole studio production team working on it, even down to Anne Dudley of Art Of Noise having scored string arrangements. If you like Horn's stuff, this is pretty good.
And now, enter the news of favourite producer Jeff Lynne having worked on some tracks for Take That themselves. I'd say a 3rd of an album of new Jeff productions or even just one new song is better than nothing.
I have to admit though, that the announcement of next year's Bryan Adams album involving Jeff Lynne had me up on my feet, and the Take That announcement just has me going "OK. So what".

I think I would have preferred to hear that Jeff was working with Gary Barlow on a Gary solo album rather than with Take That.

I really don't get this .On the one hand you say you've had to "fight the elo corner" presumably from people who have no understanding that appreciation of music is subjective. And then you fall into the same trap. I like some of TT's stuff, have seen them live a couple of times and love Jeff's stuff too right from The Idle Race up to now. Please don't get to het up about it!
