No surprise Paul (I didn't just nearly put Mikey, don't let elophile see this...) You know I just spent the last half an hour or so guessing what year photos of Paul and The Beatles were from going by how their hair looked, safe to say I'm obsessed. I can probably do that a bit with Jeff actually!

I will say that I won't argue with Bob Dylan being the number one songwriter. I mean, "Mr. Tambourine Man", "All Along the Watchtower", "Blowin' in the Wind"? No arguments from me. And who can really argue with Paul McCartney being in the top two? "Let it Be", "Band on the Run", "Hey Jude", "Can't Buy Me Love", and countless other classics.
That said, my top 10 would look like the list below, if limiting it to the popular music genre, which their list appears to do, since no signs of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, or even Gershwin, etc. And since my list can't possibly be any more subjective than their list, ...
- 11. Honorable mention to the Doug Feiger and Berton Averre duo in The Knack. 10. Donald Fagen 09. Bruce Springsteen 08. Mark Knopfler 07. George Harrison 06. Paul Simon 05. John Lennon 04. Jeff Lynne 03. Brian Wilson 02. Paul McCartney 01. Bob Dylan

Shouldn't it be Jaques Brel alone? Wasn't Scott Walker the singer (like Garfunkel sang Simon's songs, but only Simon is listed in the songwriters' list)? Scott Walker did write his own songs. This is from Scott 3 - Both these from Scott 4 - I love Scott . But the music he's written in the last 30 or so years is a bit too "experimental" for everyday listening.

Where's Jeff? They have obviously used a very small typeface for his entry because I cannot see it.
The top three makes sense. There's some good names on the list but there's also lots lacking. Glad to see Ray Davies .
Why is the Swift woman there? Just because you sell millions of records doesn't mean people will be listening to your music in 50 years time, why is she higher than Abba?
It seems to be a bit of a hipster list, full of names that give "cool points" if you mention them. In ten years time half of the modern day artists chosen will be but memories. I remember a list of the 100 best albums listed by Q in the late 90s. The Prodigy was in the top ten and there were three Oasis albums in the top 20. Of the rest of the list, what wasn't Beatles or Pink Floyd was Britpop. These kind of lists always mirror the current tastes but you'd imagine a proper music paper would know the difference between a fad and a classic.
If the guy from Greenday can be on the list why can't Jeff??? . Jeff Lynne is the only songwriter I know where people smile when you mention his name.
George Harrison is a long way back on the list but at least he's there. I can't help thinking though that his entry is just a token gesture because Lennon/McCartney is already there too.
It was a joy to see Morrissey and Marr in the list but where was Brooker and Reid?
