You do know that when Eloneen and BSJ and the rest of the crazy yanks read these comments, they will get a little tetchy don't you think?..... The better! Can't wait for that to happen! Can't picture eloneen getting too tetchy though, but you never know, maybe this list wakes up the wild dragon inside her. If, on the contrary, she votes for option #6, then I will have failed. I figured #6 was for me, Helmut83, and I almost said something about it!

I figured #6 was for me, Helmut83 , and I almost said something about it! Nah, it was a trap, for you or for anyone. If someone played the moderate guy on a subject as polemic, enthusing and water-dividing as this one, towards which no one can stay indifferent, then we'd know we'd be in the presence of a fake moderate guy, an overacting character who's trying to swindle us by showing us a facade of a peacemaker. I might have made my intention too obvious when I wrote "and other similar bullshit to pretend you are a level-headed and wise person". So far no one fell in the trap.

'course I do! After witnessing how you wanted to cut off the head of every music critic who didn't have favourable words towards Jeff Lynne after the Wembley concert -if not submit them to the rack until they changed opinions- I knew "it infuriates me" wouldn't be good enough for you.

Glad to see Ray Davies so high. But Jeff not being included, while Kanye West is, kinda negates the legitimacy of the whole thing.

well that list is just funny... did quincy jones even get in it?... dolly parton? diane warren?... holy moly I know country music get bashed a lot, particularly by the British, by I do have some respect for Dolly Parton. Anyway, each one's entitled to his own opinion, so on cutting heads! (by the way remember you can lay your vote or votes -up to 2-, dillwyn ) No you misunderstand I was saying there were some incredibly important writers left off the list (I used dolly parton only as an example of a brilliant missing songwriter) ...you could have had a 100 country writers in there by themselves. This list has no value. Bizarrely, I was listening to Johnny Walkers country music show on R2 earlier in the evening ... the British are certainly warming to it.

No you misunderstand I was saying there were some incredibly important writers left off the list (I used dolly parton only as an example of a brilliant missing songwriter) I see... but it was easy to misunderstand what you were saying because Dolly Parton is indeed on the list (check #30)! Also, in country music it is more common than in rock and pop to separate the songwriting from the intepretation, so you've got lots of guys who only write songs for others and remain in anonymity (and some of the most famous singers don't write songs or write only a few).

This is seriously bizarre! The option that is winning is the one that says that Jeff Lynne should have been included from #80 to #100! Way to make ourselves happy with little...
It's understood that if you are irked, irate or want to burn the RS down it's because you think Jeff Lynne should be top 10, if not top 5.

Here's something interesting from Wikipedia. Not that number-one singles are everything. Songwriters with the most number-one singles
32 - Paul McCartney 26 - John Lennon 22 - Max Martin (Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Taylor Swift) 17 - Mariah Carey 16 - Barry Gibb 16 - Dr. Luke (Katy Perry, Kesha, Miley Cyrus) I think the Bee Gees deserved higher ranking and I'm not a huge fan but what about Mariah Carey? Just more proof that this is a list of the "in-crowd" - not a shocker from Rollingstone. I'm renaming the RS list: The 100 hippest, most photogenic, most tragic songwriters and a few songwiters we like ironically according to the tastemakers at Rollingstone.

No surprise Paul {Spoiler} (I didn't just nearly put Mikey, don't let elophile see this...) has the most number one singles, well deserved too! I think there's a lot of good artists missed off the list, I'm surprised other members of Fleetwood Mac aren't on the list!

Good info, elophile , and good, more realistic renaming of the list. I said the same about the Bee Gees in my first comment. To Barry Gibb add Robin, who also wrote some fantastic songs like "I started a joke". They are too far down the list. Wow, Mariah Carey penned all those number-ones by herself? Really? I must confess I was ignorant about her as a songwriter. It's funny how they place Taylor Swift on the list of greatest songwriters, then it comes out someone else had been writing songs for her. As Wolfie says, she receives a lot of help. I'd like to know how she would have done writing songs on her own.
