I can't remember having debated the Rolling Stone ranking of 100 best songwriters of all time on the forum, so I'll put the subject on the table for us to discuss and criticize. Unfortunately I couldn't find a more concise list to just see who is in which position without having to scroll up and down a lot and read their description. Yes, we all know it's hard to make a ranking, opinions are very personal and all that stuff, but we don't need to hear it. Let your real me (your evil me) get on the keyboard, get the axe and tell us what's really wrong (and what's right, why not?) in your opinion with this list. In particular, I'd be interested in knowing which were the biggest head-grabbing / face-palming choices you found, people whom you believe don't even belong close to the position they are at or don't belong on this ranking at all. Oh, and if you haven't seen it, try to guess in which position of the ranking Jeff Lynne is featured! Last, I added a small poll for fun, but I'm more interested in your opinions.

elophile : I knew it! I made option #10 of the poll thinking specially in you, and you didn't disappoint! But who was #5 for ?! It's a virally famous quote from Patrick Star, of Sponge Bob, normally used for people who are clueless about what's going on or what others are talking about. Here's the original: Anyway, you are not supposed to know where it comes from, I just put it there as a random option in case anyone wanted to vote for it. Besides, I thought if Patrick Star happened to enter this forum and suddenly wanted to vote in this poll he had to have a good option available.

I like Taylor Swift a lot, I think she has a lot of good songs and is a good singer but I wouldn't class her as one of the greatest songwriters, she has a lot of help writing her songs for one and she does tend to write about similar subjects which is usually about a breakup with someone. I think great songwriters write about a range of topics. Kayne West??? Seriously??? The guy is one of the most bigheaded people in the music industry, I'm not a fan of his kind of music though I liked Four Five Seconds (probably because Macca is on it and Kayne doesn't do much singing, it's mostly Rihanna and Paul's guitar that make the song good) but he's not as good as he thinks he is! Great that George is on the list because well I like George a lot and I think his songwriting and contribution to The Beatles was underrated (people tended to focus on John and Paul's songs), I mean how brilliant is Something and other Beatles songs like I Need You, Taxman, It's All Too Much to name a few. Solo songs like My Sweet Lord, Crackerbox Palace, When We Was Fab, All Those Years Ago and the stuff he did with The Wilburys was just brilliant! Stevie Nicks, very talented woman with a cracking voice, well deserved I think. David Bowie, big fan of David Bowie so many good songs with some significant lyrics in many of them. I like some songs by Michael Jackson but always considered him to be overrated. No way is he a better songwriter than our George, get stuffed. Elvis Costello, parents like a lot of his songs (and he did My Brave Face with Macca!), feel he is underrated so good to see he is considered one of the greatest songwriters. Wrote some really catchy songs Paul Simon, completely understandable, he wrote some powerful songs (Sound of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Scarborough Fair) and some catchy songs too (Cecilia, Mrs Robinson, Call Me Al). I can understand why our Paulie is a rank higher than John, Paul was the better songwriter out of the two (maybe I'm biased I dunno?), John wrote more shitty songs than Paul (especially in the later years of The Beatles) Paul did write some crap though I admit but I always felt Paul could write a really good melody, John was a bit of a lazy songwriter I think. I do like a lot of John songs though, I just feel Paul could write a better tune but that could be me being biased. Also who the hell called Paul the weirdo behind Temporary Secretary??? How flaming rude! I think what's a joke about this list is that 3 out of the 5 Wilburys are on it (where the hell is Roy Orbison???) but they completely dismiss Jeff's career? Jeff wrote so many good tunes in ELO, also I'm gonna turn into my Mother now but where's Roy Wood? He wrote some great tunes for The Move, ELO (early) and Wizzard as well as his solo stuff! I agree with some choices but not others.

I think my biggest head-grabbing moment was seeing Bruce Springsteen at #14. What the hell is he doing there? He is a most basic songwriter. Joni Mitchel, well, she deserves to be on this list but #9 in my opinion is way too high. Taylor Swift doesn't belong in here.
The Bee Gees and the guys who wrote the songs from ABBA are both ranked 90+, I'm not a fan of any of them but that's ridiculous. How many huge hits did both those teams write?
As for the omissions, well, the Bearded One of course, but how on Earth is Cole Porter not there (and I'm far from being a fan of his)? No Brian May or Freddie Mercury either, no Plant-Page, no Carl Perkins...
Kanye West and Jay Z in a list where Cole Porter is not present is a serious joke.

Heh! There was one very obvious box for me to tick, and quite right too Having scrolled through twice what strikes me immediately as wrong is how low Bjorn and Benny of Abba are and how high Chrissie Hynde is. Most of those in the top 20 deserve to be there I suppose. As for Jeff, the poll-creators had better sleep with one eye open

As for Jeff, the poll-creators had better sleep with one eye open The poll creators might be speculating with the fact that BSJ is on a trip and only one head of the feared Monster is keeping watch over the whole forum.

Good point about Freddie and Brian, the amount of great Queen songs there were! I dunno who compiled the list but they better watch out if they've got a whole forum after them and especially with The Ninjas about!

"On a trip", yes. But with no forms submitted I would guess it's a business trip. And the monster always gets its man. Or men. Or women. All the guilty parties, in fact. So they'd better watch out is what I'm suggesting
