I’ve never heard that Jeff played the violin so I think it’s just a publicity photo. However If you ever see me with a violin it is true, I played one at school I was taught one at school but these days I prefer to cheat with a guitar synthesiser. Much easier to play. I don’t blame you using synth, I wasn’t very good at playing it sounded more like strangling a cat.

I learned the violin in school too, but it’s been a while since I’ve played it so I probably wouldn’t sound much better lol But as a string player, I must complement Jeff’s proper technique in holding the bow and his wrist!

A MIDI pick-up attaches to the guitar (the slender black module just in front of the bridge) which goes to a selector switch arrangement which I screwed to the guitar itself, my Stratocaster shown here. This model is a Roland GK-3 pick-up. The signal and the guitar output combined is then fed down a special cable to a floor controller, in this case a Roland GR-55 where the signal is split into synth audio output and guitar audio output. It also sends on the MIDI signal allowing further synthesisers, vocoder and other processors to be triggered simultaneously. As you can imagine, the sound generating capability is staggering and virtually unlimited.

It is sweet that you noticed me missing, however. Thank you. How couldn't I, Eloise ? The forum's simply not the same without you. Those jokes you make like the one about the nose-itching curse brighten up my day.

Very interesting coathanger is this the type of system Marc Mann used on the Zoom Live DVD I wonder because I read somewhere that he played a lot of the strings on his guitar.

I don't know much about latter years ELO but a quick Google produces this picture of the chap you mention. It's a bit in shadow but that's definitely a MIDI pick up of some description on his Stratocaster although I couldn't be sure what make it is or say what he's got it plugged into. I got my GR-55/GK-3 in 2010 (I think) when it was fairly new to the market so it's likely an earlier model used on the DVD you mention. Strings are one of the easiest things to mimic on a guitar synth soundwise, as are pianos and organs. The GR-55 and a few of it's predecessors also allows convincing modelling of acoustic guitars, particularly 12-string types.

Made it to second violin in our orchestra, but no further. Now, if I'd had a teacher like... Ahem, well, things could have been very different.

Excellent investment Timeblue - looks like the design is on the back, is it the same on the front?
