Wow. Having in mind how predictable Jeff's setlists are, that's something that increases the interest considerably. Can't wait to know.

I've never loved the idea of stadium gigs. All those thousands of people, plastic seats, performers nothing but a speck in the distance. And so....
In a fit of temporary madness last week, I seem to have bought tickets to Wembley .
I had the same scheme as soonerorlater - buy now-pay later. It seemed like a good arrangement.

queenofthehours : if you still not love the idea of stadium gigs or regret the actions you executed during that fit of temporary madness count on me, your good friend, to solve that situation by stoically taking in my hands the product of that madness (the tickets).

I am now convinced my madness was good and I made the right choice to get tickets! I went into a shoe shop, still feeling a little unsure about shelling out lots of £ when I don't have lots of £ and ELO was playing in the store! Not only that but it was playing throughout the time I stayed there .

That was a good omen, but even if it hadn't been there, your choice would have clearly been the right one all the same.

I also absolutely hate stadium gigs for excatly the reasons you mentioned. But against my better judgement I went to Paul McCartneys gig a few weeks ago in Munich`s Olympic Stadium and I have to admit it was fantastic. But why was it so great? It was so great not only because Macca and his lads were in great form and the gig went on for over 2 1/2 hours (and the sun even shone during the whole gig despite this rainy summer). It was such a great experience because Paul McCartney could wrap the huge audience around his finger with his charme and loveliness. And that`s what Jeff Lynne should try to do as well. I mean, he is such a lovely, humurous guy in interviews, why can`t his girl friend or his manager tell him to be just the same on stage? His shyness is completely unneccessary, the people who come to Wembley, will love him and his music, anyway.

The old stadium was known for poor acoustics as are most stadiums, when I saw them there in '86 they sounded average at best (but far superior to 'Heartbeat') like most people say, stadium gigs are a hit and miss affair but I hope the sound system at least has improved.

Yeah, the problem with stadiums is that distances are very variable (could be short or huge, depending on the seats) and that the stands, which are normally at different distances from the stage each, form barriers where the sound bounces. I'm not sure how the open top works, but that's another factor to have in mind. However, they have engineers who make lots of proofs with very advanced devices in order to make the listening experience be as good as possible, and a stadium as important as Wembley must have lots of studies already so they must know quite well what to do, where to place the speakers, how to compensate the distances with some tiny delay in the sound, etc... I'm talking out of ignorance here, but I reckon in the '70s it wouldn't be quite like that. Maybe they just placed the speakers where they thought would be OK and that's it. What I'm sure is that the listening experience must be much better these days.

I'm guessing that when the designers came up with the new Wembley plans, they had thought about the acoustics knowing full well that it would be used by the big names in rock and pop and so I'm hoping that the sound will travel well around the ground.
