With ELO now known as Jeff Lynne's ELO I have been pondering over the precise point where The Electric Light Orchestra was first dubbed ELO in the music press. I have a large collection of cuttings from the early dates to current and so far 31st January 1970 is the earliest cutting I have found where 'ELO' is not mentioned. Track forward to the following year and on 30th January 1971 ELO starts to creep in. Was it always known as both or is there a date somewhere between the two where the abbreviation 'ELO' first appears?

What a philosophico-historical question. Whichever moment was, it was a bad one. I love the name "Electric Light Orchestra", while ELO is just a tasteless acronym, but the former was condemned to be replaced by the latter because of the amount of time it takes to pronounce it.

Well, officially, I guess it was on the second album, which was called "ELO II". It must have come up earlier.

I'll be totally honest, and I'm sure I'll get shit for this, but here goes.....I think "Electric Light Orchestra" is one of the silliest band names, ever. Right up there with Edison Lighthouse, Spanky and Our Gang, and Nickelback. Luckily, they overcame that to be awesome.

I mean, the Orchestra part was a given, since Jeff/Roy wanted to include strings (and many oboes). And Electric Light is a sort of a symbol for the modern age.

I think the name originally referred to a "Light Orchestra" which were groups that consisted of a couple of cellos, a couple of violins and a viola. Hence I believe the name meant "Electric, Light Orchestra", rather than "Electric Light, Orchestra". I think it was the album artwork of a light bulb and the design similar to General Electric that people thought it was "Electric Light, Orchestra"
So, an electrified Light Orchestra. But ELO will do for me

Nah, I'm not going to give you shit just because you criticized the name my favourite band took, but as I see it, Electric Light Orchestra works on many levels. On one hand, it makes reference to a light orchestra (which you could consider the two cellos and the violin form). On the other, having in mind the other half of the band is more of a typical rock n roll band, the word "electric" is suitable. When you put together both things an interesting play on words is formed and results in "electric light", which makes sense as well. I see it as a pretty clever name, besides sounding really flamboyant. Ever heard about "The Band"? Now that's the most stupid band name ever.

Slightly off question, do you think when creating the Muppet show in the 1970's ,Jim Henson named the house band 'the Electric Mayhem Orchestra' after ELO ?
