Love Ryan's cover of Taylor Swift's "1989" album. I'll get to these and give my review soon. yes it is a really interesting take on what i assumed was a throwaway pop album...it isn't. The songs are really well constructed, she is a very clever writer.

Ryan "Don't Call Me Bryan" Adams is a name I've heard for years but never really had much of a chance to look into.
The songs featured here are really good! He reminds me quite a bit of Neil Young with hints of The Band.
My favorite of these is his fantastic cover of T'Swift's Bad Blood. He gives it his own twist without losing the basic melody of the song.
The other one that really stands out is New York, New York. The fact that the video was shot in New York just four short days before the WTC attacks just adds to the emotion of the song.
I really have to get more into some of his music, because what I've heard so far is a real treat!

Come Pick Me Up- A little Dylan. A little Elvis Costello. Great lyrics, and a very “rainy day” feel, overall. New York, New York- Always liked this one a lot. Another one with some fantastic lyrical content, and a memorable chorus. When Stars Go Blue – Takes a bit to get going, but it becomes a really nice song. Love the chorus! I think that one will stick on my head. Answering Bell- Like the jazzy vocal inflections, and the folky vibe. Sounds like some long lost song from The Band. Great tune! Nuclear – Great guitar sound, like something from out of the cosmos. Almost has a 90’s alt-rock sound, but the twists make it something special. So Alive – This could have come from an 80’s alternative/college rock band, for sure. Almost has some U2 elements, with that urgent sounding musical motif. Very interesting. Bad Blood – Stellar version of the Taylor Swift smash hit. Her version wasn’t bad, but damn, I think this one buries the original. The whole “1989” album is tremendous. Probably my second favorite album of 2015, behind AITU. Overall, I give this batch of songs a very positive 9/10. Ryan Adams is hit and miss with some folks, but I think he’s vastly underrated. Great choice, dillwyn !

I loved every single one of these songs. When Stars Go Blue is f*cking brilliant and is probably one of my favorite songs of the last ten years or so. Bad Blood makes me wish he had recorded it before that boring whitebread Taylor Swift. He owns that song, IMO.
If you are looking for more Ryan Adams, give a listen to his band Whiskeytown! F*ckin awesome.

Sorry for the late review, dwillyn, been slammed all week! Good stuff, comments below!
"Come Pick Me Up" - Nice laid back feel, immediately thinking of Bob Dylan late sixties early seventies.
"New York, New York" - Oh my gosh! September 7, 2011, what a day to shoot a video for this song. It's a great tune too, really brings you in! Rappers should take notes of lots of words with a melody!
"When Stars Go Blue" - Very nice, great female accompaniment vocal. My fave so far, this guy is good! This song is a keeper!
"Answering Bell" - Good straightforward folky rocker.
"Nuclear" - Pretty good chorus for a song that has more of a feather effect than nuclear effect on me. Ha ha. But it fits nicely in with the other selections.
"So Alive" - Immediately reminds me of the Spanish guy that Helmut selected, same exact style, reminded me of as soon as I heard it.
"Bad Blood" - Very pleasant, and nice engaging chorus. Like the tone of the vocal on that one.
Star Rating: 4.2 out of 5 Prime Cuts: "When Stars Go Blue", "So Alive", "Bad Blood" Bottom Line: Weaves a powerful relaxing folk-Americana feel, with authentic lyrics.
Thanks dwillyn, was great to find out what this cat is all about; what would you say is his best CD if I was going to check one out?
Will mark you down for the next open spot!
Jim

Like most people I've heard of Ryan Adams, pondered why he didn't devise a stage name that wouldn't confuse him with Mr B Adams, heard him now and then on the radio but never followed him up. Now's my big chance... Come Pick Me Up - Reminds me of the modern country songs Bob Harris is so keen on, on Radio 2, by the likes of Garth Brooks. Very laid back and laconic, I'd have to be in the mood to listen to it, especially for all of its 5 minutes plus running time (I did this time though, honest) New York, New York - Liking the Pinball Wizard opening, I recognise this from the radio. How poignant to see the Twin Towers in the video, gives the song an added perspective although I didn't think it was that old. Nice upbeat tune, this is much better than Come Pick Me Up for me When Stars Go Blue – Another country-stye duet, or at least with very forward backing vocals. Nice warm sounding acoustic guitars, pretty chorus and it's a much better length than Come Pick Me Up at around 3 and a half minutes. Think it might be a grower. Answering Bell - This must have been a single, it sounds really familiar. Not mad about the banjo, trying to figure out who his vocals remind me of, someone like Lloyd Cole or Jonathan Richman. LOVE the video, look at Elton John being a wizard! Ryan could easily be his son, he looks a lot like him. Enjoyed this more as it went along. Nuclear – Nice raspy vocals, interesting guitar sounds. Meaty song with lots going on, I rather liked it. So Alive – Very indie-sounding, almost Smiths-y especially the vocals. Much more up my street, this is my favourite so far plus it has a great video where he sports a Matt Bellamy haircut, can't fault this Bad Blood – The vocals here remind me a lot of Cast, it rolls along well with some nice guitar but doesn't stand out for me particularly. The first few songs were a certain sort of American rock which is not entirely my sort of genre, for example I'd put Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp into the same bracket. It's not the kind of music I'd normally put on but if it does happen to be playing on the radio I'd notice and consider it to be quality stuff for its type. The songs towards the end of the collection did raise my opinion of him, and I do like the way he uses his voice in a lot of different ways. I'll award it 7 out of 10, thanks for sharing dillwyn

I've heard of Ryan Adams but never took much notice of his songs and I liked every one of those. He is someone I would like to play live.

Come Pick Me Up - I've loved Ryan for years and this is one of the old tunes I remember. I love the country elements and the harmonica. In fact it's because Ryan's music was country that I loved him.
New York, New York - I remember when this song came out and the video was on tv. It's a great video and watching it reminds you of a time before when the world had less worries .
When Stars Go Blue – Everything about this is why I love Ryan! The vocals, the tune, the beautiful piano and the guitar are all perfect. Even strings as well
Answering Bell - Another favourite I’d forgotten about this song. I loved to sing along to it. I love the organ in the background and all the country elements.
Nuclear – I remember I had this on a free CD from a magazine and played this track to death. It's one of the tracks where Ryan I thought was more rock than country and was beginning to change. He always had great guitar though.
So Alive – No longer sounding like he used to, not sounding very country but sounding more fully rock and a bit new wave here. Totally different in fact to how I remember Ryan yet I still love this. Being an ELO fan I can deal with people I love changing their style every now and then slightly! I know that the basic talents of the person remain the same no matter if newer tracks are unlike the classics. But this track really is fantastic.
Bad Blood – Back to country sounds here but still with strong rock elements, that's why I love Ryan. I can be really picky with the newer stuff from artists I love after I've lost track of them but not with Ryan . Very catchy and much too short.
I've always loved Ryan since around 2000 when he got really big, I think I was pretty much in love with him and still am! I actually found out about him and his group from a Gram Parsons tribute album and I would certainly put him in the same greats category as Gram.
