I've never seen the attraction of following a team 100's of miles away just because they are on the tele. As with my most teams it has been terribly thin .. all through my childhood it was a slow yo-yo down from div 2 (now called championship) down to div 4 and back again. I was too young to remember us beating real madrid in the european cup winner cup semi final and wasn't even born when we won the fa cup so really all the notable moments have come in the last 10+ years. That has seen us get 2 promotions, 2 major uk cup finals( fa and league, losing both to div 1 opposition), win and lose play-offs and now a couple of promotions to div1 (called EPL at the moment ) and of course the relegation. My kids of course think this is usual, I've explained for every up there is generally a down . I have still loved every minute over the years, especially given the generational connection, my kids never met my dad as he died years before my first was born and yet his influence goes on.

All of which confirms what I was saying. Small team victories are more related to family, city, tradition, bonding through suffering, players are less superstars and more "reachable"... Liverpool or Real Madrid might win the Champions League (6th or 13h respectively) and still their fans probably won't find as much genuine joy as Cardiff Blues' fans -or many other humble teams around the world fans- find in their triumphs, be it a promotion or whatever other achievement.

Even though I'm not from Southampton, I've followed Saints since moving here almost twenty years ago. I suppose the true mark of a fan is the support given to teams through tough times, as well as good. Dark days, indeed, for Saints in the past with two successive relegations - and two years in League 1. I hope that the season just ended makes all at St Mary's a bit more competitive. We can't have Bournemouth AND Brighton above us in the league again next year! (Oh, the shame!) Well done Cardiff - justly deserved! You're quite right to celebrate it dillwynMy heart goes out to the Swans. Honestly, it does. Hopefully they'll regroup and get back up into the Premier League next season. As you said Helmut83, a bit of Welsh rivalry would be interesting.

Dedicated to Mr. Zizou, for all the times he left Gareth on the bench while Asensio and Vázquez were playing.

Incredible goal, suggestion he is leaving this summer (to man utd). Wish he would choose his home town club, we might stay up next year then

Buttler, I agree with you. Ever since Real Madrid paid that incredibly high fee for Bale there seems to be an unfair bias against him that follows him everywhere he goes, fueled by journalism who are eager to say "he wasn't worth that money, he is a failure". He suffered several injuries (not his fault), but when he was on form he was always amazing. And I love Zidane but he seems to be part of that bias. Bale is a hell of a player, much better than Asensio and Lucas Vazquez. And let's not forget that Bale scored the winning goal in the 2014 Champions League too.

dillwyn : not to ruin your illusion, but I think rather than getting Bale it's more likely that the Liverpool goalkeeper might be sent downyour way. Poor guy, I felt sorry for him. Him and his family must be suffering a horrible time now. And all because of two unfortunate actions in a football game, there's no proportion to it (and this coming from a football fan).

arrggghhhh....no our keeper is good enough thanks ...although we always need a backup. Agreed about him suffering thought, liverpool showed no class in my opinion. Not one of his team mates went to support him, it was up to the RM players

The poor guy was in hell and not one of his teammates went to comfort him. Jürgen Klopp was nowhere to be seen either. That leads to think that the human factor in Liverpool might not have been the best.

One of their many quality exports from the Marchwood training ground yes they signed a lot of soton players and missed the best one ...mind you soton beat cardiff to him at 8 years old
