I am not sure if this is the correct area for this but here goes. For the vinyl fans there are clear vinyl re-issues of Eldorado, A New World Record and Out of the Blue scheduled on the 18th as listed on Amazon. These appear to be cheaper than the previous re-issues, but the site www.whatrecords.co.uk have them even cheaper - £12.99 for Eldorado / ANWR and £15.99 for OotB. There is significant postage on top (up to £8) but I have ordered all three for just under £50. I have used What Records before and had no problems so these should arrive OK I hope.

I didn't specify this in my earlier thread, but Rob Caiger also recently confirmed the new clear vinyl pressings are cut from the same digital source as the 2001-7 remasters, Classic Albums Collection boxed set and latest high resolution download versions (which are due to be replaced by all-analogue transfers from the best possible quality tapes for a complete overhaul of the entire catalogue next year). While they're probably good from a collector's perspective, I'm more of an audiophile and can't really justify paying again for something that will provide little - if any - improvement over what's already out there. Plus, I'd rather wait for the archival releases he also promised in the hope at least one of these will be the full Secret Messages, even highlights of The Garden Rehearsals or the long-rumoured Time Tour recordings...

Welcome aboard whoman !
As a fellow vinyl 'enthusiast' I too have ordered a complete set of the clear vinyl pressings - I just couldn't resist. I'm also a bit of an audiophile as well so I'm not really buying these to repeatedly listen to, simply to look at and enjoy from a visual perspective. It takes me back to the frantic days of the late seventies when I just had to have every conceivable coloured vinyl pressing that ELO put out there and now I suspect, I'm exactly the sort of person that these latest releases are really aimed at?
I'm slightly surprised that Eldorado is included in this batch. It seems a little out of place and I thought that they might go with the classic trilogy of ANWR, OOTB and Discovery, instead of just two of those titles. Perhaps there's an intention to release the whole lot on clear/coloured vinyl - you can but hope!

I have to admit that the appearance of these is what is most appealing, and the reasonable price. I had a surprise the other day when I checked eBay to find Secret Messages, 1985 re-issue Night the Light Went On... and the clear vinyl On The Third day sell for decent amounts. I chucked mine out only a few years back (in the skip!) and regret that now.
What I really want is the tri-fold On the Third Day re-issuing without Showdown - that really breaks the flow to my mind. And a gate-fold ELO2 with the UK cover... and the double LP version of Secret Messages... oh and that gate-fold Face the Music looks nice in the Collectors section, wouldn't mind one of those. Also a nice re-issue of Message from the Country in the UK sleeve.

I have Out of the Blue and New World Record on the Music on Vinyl label, Eldorado has been ordered. Are the clear vinyl releases on 180gr vinyl?

The clear vinyl re-issues arrived today. They are 180g pressings and are numbered on the sleeves (printed on ANWR and OotB, a sticker on Eldorado). A New World Records is glossy and has the ELO logo embossed, the other two have a more matt finish. Out of the Blue has printed sleeves whereas the other two have anti-static bags and printed inserts. Unfortunately they all have the Epic labels rather than Jet. I am pleased with these and they sound pretty good to me. If even better versions are released next year as per Shardenders posts I will consider doubling up but I like these for now.

I'm really pleased with these re-issues, they look fantastic and sound pretty good as well.
My main minus point though (as others have mentioned) is the use of plain and very unimaginative 'Epic' record labels. How good would the original ELO 'logo' label look on ANWR set against the clear vinyl? It looks great on the original red vinyl issue. Anyone who picked up a copy of the old Three Light Years box set back in the seventies may recall that each album was pressed with a label reproducing the album's front cover art on one side with the complete track listing restricted to the other side. Now that would have looked good on these re-issues.
Minor gripes aside, this is a wonderful pre-Christmas gift for vinyl enthusiasts like me and to top it all, my copy of Eldorado is copy no. 1000 !!

Despite my earlier reservations, I've been reliably informed these new pressings use the same stampers as the MOV editions, so while they're still limited by the quality of the original remaster sources, you're actually getting the what many consider the best analogue versions of those digital files, if that makes any sense. Unfortunately, it seems as if the sleeve and label art leaves a lot to be desired, plus I'm hearing there's some noise at the start of each side. Still, for those who've yet to collect ELO's back catalogue on vinyl, you can do a lot worse than pick up these stop-gaps to the promised upgrades due to be officially announced closer to release next year...

Any rumours on these re-issues? What makes them superior? I am interested in CDs for bonus tracks, but original format for the vinyls - well apart from Secret Messages natch.

I've bought all 3 standard lp releases but numbered and on clear vinyl OOTB doesn't have space ship but does have poster ANWR and E also have lyric insert. They are double sided and separate to the lps which are placed in plain lined white sleeves

I meant the new re-issues that Shardender is talking about, sorry I wasn't clear about that. I like the clear ones that just arrived, although I would prefer Jet labels on them. This could be fun and hark back to the 70s heyday, to re-issue the LPs in box sets that follow quite nice themes/periods: Two Light Years - Message from the Country (proto ELO), Electric Light Orchestra, ELO2: The early Harvest Years Three Light Years - On the Third Day, Eldorado, Face the Music: Evolving sound, brink of major success Four Light Years - A New World Record, Out of the Blue, Discovery: The imperial years Five Light Years - Time, Secret Messages, Balance of Power: 80s move to electronica The Two Light Years is just an excuse to get Message from the Country re-issued on vinyl. All LPs in original UK format (except maybe Secret Messages) and UK labels. Bonus discs of extra material where available.

Slightly concerned by some of the less-than-flattering reviews of these pressings (have a look at some of the Amazon reviews, for example), I finally managed to play the entirety of ANWR through my headphones. You can dismiss it as nostalgia if you like but I thought it sounded wonderful - warm, precise and sonically detailed, easily the equivalent of other vinyl pressings I've acquired over the past few months.
What a great album too. I probably haven't played it on vinyl since the late 80's and it reminded me all over again just exactly how and why I developed my love for this band in the first place. It's great strength for me, is to demonstrate to everyone that ELO aren't just a 'greatest hits' act, however they're marketed. Just listen to Tightrope, So Fine, Above The Clouds and Shangri-La for example and you're suddenly so far removed from the singles that they (the singles) start to feel slightly intrusive!
All from an album that is now approaching it's fortieth anniversary! Happy New Year everyone - we all know that it's going to be one of the best ever ELO years.
