Three or four weeks ago while I was on vacations in Mendoza (western province of Argentina) my mother sent me this flier via Instagram:
Nube 9 is a locally well known Beatles tribute act. They've been going for a long while already, at least 15 years, and I had attended a few concerts of them before. They also played as opening act for Ringo Starr himself when he came with his All Starr Band to Buenos Aires in 2012 so I had also seen them there. They are really good, but I had no clue they were ELO fans too.
In any case, an ELO tribute show here in Argentina (even if it was split with their usual Beatles tribute) is something I never though I'd be able to witness, so there wasn't a chance in hell I was going to miss it. And my mom, while not being a big ELO fan, likes a few of their songs and is always willing to attend anything Beatles related, so she booked her place as soon as she was sure I was attending.
So we did attend, last Saturday night, at a theater in Buenos Aires. The theater was quite original in that it didn't have the typical theater setting with rows of seats, but it had tables instead, with 4 chairs each, where people would sit like in a restaurant, even if all the chairs would be turned towards the stage when the show started. But it was a very nice place with a big stage where the band was very comfortable. The attendance was excellent, in fact all tickets were sold and the theater was full, although I'll never know how many of those people were there for ELO and how many for the Beatles.
Of course I sported my ELO shirt which I acquired in England after Jeff Lynne's show and a few people stopped me to talk about ELO, we shared our fanatism and a few anecdotes.
The first half of the show was the Beatles part. My mom had never seen them live so she was surprised by how good these guys sounded, and she enjoyed it a lot. After that there was an interval, and then the strong course -at least for me- came.
The show exceeded my expectations. It was amazing. They sounded really good, you could tell they had put a lot of work and love into it. They didn't hold back anything, not even in terms of production. A few more musicians joined the band: a second keyboardist with two keyboards, a violinist, a couple of backing vocals singers and occasionally one or two others, and it really paid off as the songs sounded much fuller and more complete with them. And you could tell that the leader and singer of the band really loved ELO and was really feeling the music and enjoying the show. After pretty much every song he'd say "what an awesome song!". And that enjoyment got transmitted to the audience. The applause after every song was rabid (more than in the Beatles' part), and at the end there was a standing ovation.
Besides the usual hits (the ones Jeff plays in his tours), I also got a personal favorite of mine played: "Midnight Blue". They even played one of the new ones, "When I was a boy"; "Last train to London", which could never be missing in Argentina; and for the encores they played "Handle with Care" by the Wilburys.
Here's a small video I made with bits I filmed:
It was a wonderful and emotional moment to me, living where I live, in a part of the world where most people don't even know what ELO is and where I never thought I'd be able to get a live ELO related show to attend. Musically speaking, I've got no shame in admitting that their performance was more lively and transmitted more to me than that of Jeff and his band in London (although of course Jeff's show wins because the actual man who wrote the songs is standing there and singing). After so many times of playing overplaying the original recordings this was also a chance to hear ELO's music in a different version, which allows you to rediscover the beauty of Jeff Lynne's music and remind you in full swing why you are such a big ELO fan.
At the end it was so clear that it had been such a success that they assured right there and then that they will be playing the ELO show again, so I'll probably attend again.
