Ok, found this on YT and was interested to hear a rare live version of a favourite and classic song, but I think it's clear why Rafferty rarely performed live on tv if this godawful racket is anything to go by. The sax player, can't resist showing off with a bit of noodling instead of sticking to the original solo, the drummer is thrashing the drums like Keith Moon and the guitarist could have at least bothered to properly tune his guitar before delvering the proverbial 'cat-being-strangled' solo. Oh well, at least Rafferty's vocal is ok but considering this is the band from the original studio recording they could have tried a bit harder.

This is my all time favourite numero uno song of all time and I have to disagree with you....to a point. The vocals by Gerry there were spot on,couldn't fault them.the drummer maybe was a little heavy handed but this was live and of course a rock song. Raf Ravenscroft the saxophonist did a good job imho and when playing live, name me a musician who doesn't 'noodle' a bit? This has to be the greatest saxophone solo in rock history. The only let down was the guitarist who did strangle the cat a bit there but it was LIVE so maybe he wasn't tuned in properly, who knows? all in all I've always enjoyed this live version as it's a bit of a rarity....

I quite enjoyed it too, see what you mean about the sax riffage - maybe if he'd only elaborated on it once it would have been OK, but to change it that way every time did get a bit tiresome. Everything else was fine, especially Gerry's vocals which are always a treat Thanks for posting it fourlittlediamonds

Well, each to their own and differences of opinion welcomed (as long as they're not too different from mine!)
For me this lacks the subtly and atmosphere of the studio track and perhaps it just not suited to a live performance. There is just something about Baker Street, so evocative and in some ways, of its time and yet also timeless. I never get tired of hearing it which is handy as if you turn on a radio anytime you'll find a station somewhere playing it.

Sorry for being OT, but what about this amazing saxophone solo? (3:42 - 4:36)

Gerry had one of the most soothing voices I ever heard, he was very unique. I always thought, much like Jeff Lynne and George Harrison, he was a reluctant rock star. It was a shame how things turned out.

I wonder if he and Jeff ever met? I know Jeff is friendly with Billy Connolly, who was in The Humblebums with Gerry years ago. I'd like to think they'd have got along famously.

I often wondered what Baker Street would have sounded like if Jeff had done a cover.

They likely crossed paths. They were similar in that neither ran and jumped around on stage. It was always about the music.

I often wondered what Baker Street would have sounded like if Jeff had done a cover. Well the drums would have been different.
