Fire On High - Roger Waters would sell his granny and a whole lot more to have this within the Pink Floyd canon. It's 10/10 on atmosphere and prog-tastic to the max. Those sci-fi orchestral notes that eventually dissolve into an acoustic guitar riff would be, if a Floyd song, celebrated as genius in magazines to this day. I love it but I have to also accept it is a very effective horror movie soundtrack opening, followed by an atmospheric set of orchestral notes, followed by an acoustic guitar riff then repeat. That's good enough for Pink Floyd, ELO can do better imo.
Tightrope - As they did on this. This is everything you want from ELO on show and done well. The orchestral build-up, the switch to the guitar verse, the soothing bridge and...a chorus which swoons - it doesn't matter the title is left far behind in the lyrics. Unlike Fire On High this is a full song, with everything in place and it sounds great - much like the whole album you're about to hear. You want to show someone an intro to ELO? Starting with this ain't a bad idea.
Big Wheels - What I personally want from ELO from start to finish. 4.10- 4.20 is like conducting an orchestra in your room type stuff. So many parts, hooks and melodies. After you play anyone an intro to ELO, hook them on the likes of this. There's no wonder so many reaction videos of this have people crying. It still makes me well up. Just pop genius in full display.
Shangri-La - Like all of you I guess, I remember hearing it come back to life after you thought it was finished and it was wonderful. The backing vocals, the switch to the soprano from Rockaria, Bev's drums.....awesome. It will always have a special place in my heart but...that returning emotion aside, is it a better song than some of these? It's not but it's beautiful.
So I voted for Tightrope & Big Wheels.
