It is likely that we will never hear what Motor Factory (Rock 'n Roll is King's early version) sounded like, with the vocal track's ultimate fate being unknown from what we understand. I know there are a few details giving such as chorus being "we are work-work-work-work-working in a motor factory", something to that effect. Also Bev once said that they used the same backing track from Motor Factory on Rock 'n Roll is King. So my fellow ELOers, based on Jeff's lyrical style, what do you think the lyrics could have been? I wonder if some of the lyrics from this time were kept such as "It rolls like a train that's coming on down the track." If you could rewrite Rock 'n Roll is King's lyrics to become a potential Motor Factory, what would you use? Feel free to write down entire verses and such if you feel creative. Have fun!

Well, we know that Motor Factory was written as a fictional chant sung by workers at the Austin Longbridge car plant, which explains the sampled engine revving noises and metallic percussion designed to emulate a lathe being struck with a hammer - perhaps these effects were directly referenced in the lyrics? I wouldn't be surprised if the line "she loves that driving beat" was carried over, and the part about "a train that's comin' on down the track" might have been a nod to the conveyor belts typically seen in this kind of industrial environment. Apart from those somewhat educated guesses, I really don't know where to start. A further mystery complicating this task is that we can't be sure Motor Factory even used the same melody as Rock 'N' Roll Is King - just listen to how different Jeff's leads on In For The Kill and the alternate version of A Matter Of Fact are compared with their more familiar b-side variations! Saying that, what can be remembered of the original chorus seems to fit the final track's rhythm, so we have at least that as a possibility...

Well maybe we just start by following Rock 'n Rock is King's melody but have some fun and take liberties with it if seen fit. I like your idea of keeping "driving beat". And since it was written as a chant, perhaps the song lyrics can revolve around similes to music. "It rolls like a train that's coming down the track" referencing conveyor belts? It certainly works. Instead of the opening line being "Listen everybody let me tell you 'about the rock and roll", we can change it to "Listen everybody let me tell you 'about the Motor Factory." The rhythm is the same except the whole line is said in a continuous eighth-note rhythm, as opposed to having a eighth rest after "and" ('bout the rock and *eighth* roll). Hope this is easy to understand. If it is, let's start here?

How about this ?
Listen everybody let me tell you bout the motor cars We build em in the factory And theyre really gonna take you far Wed love to come and play But here we've gotta stay They've got us Working working working working Working in the factory.
Oh yeah We're here all night Got us slogging all through the day We're sweating in the paintshop on the line In the valet bay. We could strike for some more dough. But our wives are saying "no" "Keep on working working working working Workin in the factory"
Oh let those cars roll on on the line on the line Oh let those horns ring out When its home time.
Oh were workin' through the week Just trying to keep the family fed I hear the humming of the factory Even when I'm laying in my bed . I need a holiday Can't afford one on my crappy pay
Ill keep on workin working working working working in the factory.
Oh let those cars roll on on the line on the line Oh let those horns ring out When its home time
Oh when the weekend comes I'm a gonna spend it in my house With the wife and kids Until she really starts to grouse. So then i cannot wait Till Monday comes around again
And ill be working working working working working in the factory
Yeah yeah working working working working In the factory I'll keep on working working working working In the factory.
