Oh, my! I've been waiting for this for ages, then I'm down with a virus and you two choose that exact moment to come up with your writeup! What an amazing experience so far! Chicago's buildings look so much like those old Maffia movies. nobodyschild getting her feet in the lake, do people bathe there in summer? And your faces during the soundcheck... like two toddlers with new toys. What an experience, I can only imagine what you two guys must have felt standing exactly where Jeff stands, facing the whole stadium. What will come up next? We are getting closer to the main dish now... PS: beware what you say, so far no one on this forum who has claimed to be a good singer escaped recording a song with me.

Yes, BIuebird , for the epic story! But wouldn't mind a sister-fight for the preview. Oh, well. That's my Dude! Maybe we could solve it with something in between both things: an epic story of a sis-fight during the trip!

Here’s the next installment! After the incredible visit onstage, Emilie turned us over to ELO’s head rigger, Johannes, who would be our tour guide. He’s a really friendly guy, and he introduced us to everyone we bumped into by joking “They’ve won a competition, so now I get to bore them with a tour.” We started in the loading bays behind the stage, where all the equipment had been brought in beginning at 8:00 am. The band brings all their own equipment, and so at each venue the crew has to measure out the arena and set up the rigging accordingly. They build the stage out in the middle of the floor while they’re hoisting all the trusses, lights, LED screens, and speakers up, and then simply roll the completed stage underneath. “Steppin’ Out” on our backstage production tour Below the stage are huge boxes for power and tons of fat cables—everything except their PA system runs on European power and so has to be converted. We got to see the booth with all of Jeff’s guitars in it (and wow he’s got a lot!) where the stage crew monitor things and run out the next guitar when he needs it, and the little tent where Jeff hangs out while waiting to come back on for the encore. There’s also a sound control booth beneath the stage; they’re in charge of the sound samples and effects, as well as what the band members hear in their earpieces—each musician gets a personalized mix so that they can hear themselves and the other musicians, and it also takes out the variable of the crowd noise. (So if The Beatles had earpieces like that, then all those screaming girls wouldn’t have been any problem!) Next we went to the mixing board and light board at the back of the floor. This is where they balance the overall arena sound, with presets on the board for each instrument. The lights program is very cool; they have a simulator that allows them to adjust the lights and lasers for the dimensions of each arena. They even demonstrated the lights for us while we were back there! Our reaction when they turned on ALL of the lights: There’s two cameras back there as well, and one up in the balcony and some by the stage, and everything is recorded on separate tracks so it can later be mixed for a live album or video. Then we went out into the hallway, where the TV booth was set up, showing the view of the stage from several camera angles so they can control what’s on screen during the performance. After that, we even had a peek into one of the band’s busses, and the kitchen!

Girls, this write up of your exciting experience is so well done. What appreciation you had when it came to showtime. Ha! Neat seeing the same guys at the mixing and light boards who I saw in Detroit. Got nosey on the way back from the bathroom (after Dhani) and took a few photos. Hey, looks like you worked poppa like a rented mule!

if @grroosss or nobodyschild have to write the dreaded "what I did on my Summer vacation" essay, they are going to be so ready! they can even borrow the title from Jeff "The Way Life's Meant to Be"

Great write up so far, I love all the details about the stage setup! My family and I were wondering how they got those images (like the spaceship) on the stage floor. So, they are projected from underneath? How cool! Looking forward to the next installment!

Hey, looks like you worked poppa like a rented mule! It's crazy the world of things that happen behind a big professional music show, most that one doesn't even know about, some that one might only vaguely suspect. A massive network of coordinated things that have to come out well in order for the show to be a success. To mention just one thing, I would never have guessed that the lights/laser show needed to be adapted to the size of the venue. How incredible that they played the whole lasers thing just for you! Great write up girls, if only too short each part (at least for my taste, it leaves you wanting more). I'm starting to suspect that you might be enjoying this thing of having us all itching for your new installment...

Hey, looks like you worked poppa like a rented mule! What can I say, he insisted! My family and I were wondering how they got those images (like the spaceship) on the stage floor. So, they are projected from underneath? How cool! Yep! It’s basically an LED dance floor. Here’s a picture where you can kinda see: Great write up girls, if only too short each part (at least for my taste, it leaves you wanting more). I'm starting to suspect that you might be enjoying this thing of having us all itching for your new installment... Very observant, isn’t he?

so who's taking the pics where Dad is in the image? it seems like there's some mystery camera person floating around to document the trip. Sort of like how they filmed "The Office".

Great write up girls, if only too short each part (at least for my taste, it leaves you wanting more). I'm starting to suspect that you might be enjoying this thing of having us all itching for your new installment... You know why the girls are doing this? Because they know some of us have no self control! (me!) If they posted their whole chronicle at once, I'd scroll right down to the Damey posts first! This is more enjoyable.
