I recently purchased this news clipping from 1976 stating ELO had been denied permission by the Greater London Council to use their laser display at their forthcoming concert at the Victoria Theatre. The concert at the New Victoria Theatre was originally planned to take place on Saturday 8th May 1976 but was cancelled. It was rescheduled for Sunday 20th June 1976. The Electric Light Orchestra wanted to use the lasers in their show but the G.L.C. were unsure what effects such lasers had in public and deemed them too dangerous to be used. I was under the impression ELO first used lasers in 1978 during their world tour. Any thoughts?

I was under the impression ELO first used lasers in 1978 during their world tour. Any thoughts? You obtained a copy of the original newspaper clipping? And it looks to be in good condition. Impressive! I've seen scans of it on Facebook, and the discussion included some folks who recalled the event. What they said was the G.L.C. was concerned about lasers blinding people, and had local ordinances in place strictly regulating the use of lasers at public performances. ELO's lasers may have been in accordance with the regulations, but none of the management remembered to submit the specifications of the laser show. The Jeff Lynne Song Data Base contains quite a bit of great information about the 1976 tour, including the fact that the performances at the New Victoria Theatre were recorded and later released as the Fusion videos. Jeff Lynne Song Data BaseI believe ELO first used lasers on August 9, 1976, in Los Angeles, CA. The stories about this concert are somewhat legendary for its hot air balloon emblazoned with the newly-designed ELO logo and a disco ball dangling from it. Lasers were shot up to the disco ball and reflected into the audience. The police department received over 1,000 panicked called because residents believed they had seen a UFO!

Does anyone know what the TV recording referenced in the article would be? As in whether it’s still around to view, on DVD etc?

I was at the Manchester Free Trade Hall concert in June 19th 76, they used the laser and the mirror ball that night.
I kept a scrap book from 73, till around 79, also got the cutting, cost me a fortune buying NME,Sounds and Melody Maker every week just for news on ELO to put in it,the things you do for love.

The cellotape has gone yellow and holding nothing in, the clippings are going yellow and becoming fragile, just falling to bits.
Looks like I have now a major scanning and restoration job on my hands , when I have finished it, you are welcome to have a copy. Just a warning, some of the UK reviews are down right nasty, so much that Roy Wood wrote a letter to tell them so.
EXCITING ELO by Roy Wood. After reading MM's reveiw on the Electric Light Orchestra at Drury Lane Theatre, I can honestly say I've never read such a self indulgent cocky reporter's s--- in all my life. There is a lot more, and he ends it with, Clean your bloody ears out and listen to El Dorado, nice one Roy.
