I wonder how long it would take to listen to 2,000 tapes... It does seem like a rather daunting task, much easier to just pretend you don't have a tape player. On another note, I finally found a physical copy of FOON yesterday! I had taken my brother to FYE, and they had one copy of it left on the New Releases stand. Well, no copies left now, because I bought it to give to a friend for Christmas. She's a casual fan, so she doesn't have it yet.

I'm sure the contents of all those tapes have been transferred into a digital storage format, though listening to them is probably more the job of a researcher or catalogue archivist... Saying that, it Jeff ever did need someone to see what exactly might be in his vast personal collection, I'd be more than happy to offer my time and services!

Its been 6 weeks in the top 30 plus wherever today's chart position is, does anyone know what the total sales are and whether FOON has gone Silver or Gold yet?

39 JEFF LYNNE'S ELO From Out of Nowhere Columbia, No Matter how uncertain the times, you always know where you stand with ELO, The latest from Jeff Lynne's one-man operation (except for Steve Jay's percussion and a cameo from longtime pianist Richard Tandy) continued the stellar work of 2015 comeback Alone in the Universe, delivering a blend of heart stopping chord changes and spacey concerto pop, perfectly illustrated by the sublime title track. RH Killer track: From Out of Nowhere

I received FOON for Christmas and have listened to it increasingly over the last couple of weeks. I agree with another poster that it is a bit of a slow burner, but it does grow. Also, in my view, the later part of the album is superior to the earlier part.
On the question of the muffled sounds and compression used, I don't know whether my ears adjust to it or whether it is just the opening track that is particularly muffled. The snare drum sound is particularly irritating on the first two tracks, but increased treble settings alleviate this and bring out the hi hats better. The crash cymbal still speaks too slowly and is too distant. That's the negativity over with.
Of the songs themselves:
FOON - drums apart, the call/response vocals recall OOTB and the chorus fade-out is a strong refrain.
Help Yourself - this contains a pleasant but short guitar solo which blends imaginative with the keyboards. I consider this to be the least strong of the songs.
All My Love - this is a neat but short song. The vocal harmonies are strong and the echoing effect on the lead vocal is good.
Down Came The Rain - the change of key for the refrain featuring call/response is very good, and the lead guitar with the twin melody is excellent.
Losing You - this is a much slower tempo and the quality is instant from the start. The 'middle eight' and the harp effect, the call/response, the descending harmony - all add up to a fine effort.
One More Time - an up-tempo rock n roll, with vocal harmony in the chorus. The central break out reminds me vaguely of something by Lloyd Webber - is it Cats or Starlight Express? Don't know. It's not long enough be anything. more than a nod to it, if that. Good to hear Richard Tandy at the ivories mid-stream.
SciFi Woman - up-tempo again. The key change for the middle eight elevates this to a superior work, and there are interesting keyboard additions throughout. The guitar work, both lead and rhythm, is superb.
Going Out On Me - this has a familiar chord sequence reminiscent of music set in the '50s. Similar to one or two song structures in 'Grease'. It is beautifully arranged with excellent guitar work in the solo and leading up to the song's end.
Time of our Life - this has a high energy tempo with a thumping, driving beat. Irrespective of whether it can only be enjoyed by those at 'that' show, there are sequences similar to 'Jungle' in OOTB, and the clever incorporation of 'Telephone Line' with the crowd cheering is neatly achieved and adds to the sheer joy of the song. The guitar lead hints at 'The Way Life's Meant to Be'.
Songbird - the final song, which is slow tempo, reflective, quite downbeat. There is some excellent, emotional lead guitar work which has similarity with some material on Time and Secret Messages
In summary, the whole thing is beautifully crafted and performed. Each song has its own strong points. Every song is different, although some, naturally, hint at earlier material, which is to be expected with a composition history as long and successful as Jeff's. The only negative is the production or sound engineering which muffles and compresses the sound, reducing the 'wide' soundscapes of earlier years.
If you haven't heard it yet, get yourself a copy.
