Another superb song, as Jeff was starting to define his own songwriting identity. I'll possibly post a rubbish ELO track on here soon if I can find one, but this was another peach. Bit of a crossover song for me. I hope to God that Mr Lynne doesn't read this or his head will grow bigger than his hairdo. Opinions?

I like the verse, it flows well, but the "no, no, no, really can't do that" part totally kills the song for me. It's anticlimatic. And final part of the song has too much rubbish.
I think if Jeff had done something more compact, just a couple of verses and choruses, and maybe a violin solo, it would have been a good song. But the actual version has too many bits that shouldn't be there in my opinion, too many things in excess.

I love Jeff's vocals on this song. He really lets loose. The reverse lyrics hype at the front is golden. Not in love with the female vocals, though. Cheapens it. I give it a 7.

Reminds me I haven't listened to Face the Music for ages. Perhaps I'll go through the whole back catalogue, while I'm at it.

Not in love with the female vocals, though. Cheapens it. I agree. Same as on Evil Woman, I dislike that lady's (was it Suzi Quatro's sister?) way of singing and screaming. I find it vulgar, anti-feminine.

I like the song, it's a bit of fun and pretty different from what Jeff was doing at the time. I wonder if anyone else had an input in the writing of it?

Its final chords are a good prelude to the superb One Summer Dream that follows it on FTM. Bliss.

I like the gospel effects that Jeff put into that song. He was experimenting and as usual he pulled it off well.
at least the names of the backup singers on Down Home Town aren't lost to history: Wikipedia lists them Ellie Greenwich – uncredited vocals Susan Collins – uncredited vocals Nancy O'Neill – uncredited vocals Margaret Raymond – uncredited vocals
the JL song database has a quote from Margaret <<Jeff let me do the small solo part that I came up with... 'Ooooo I feel you coming down now'. What a thrill. You can hear all of us on that track very well, especially the part: 'Wish I was in the land of Dixie'... on the end I am the first to sing 'Look Away'.>>

Ellie Greenwich is a well known name, as well as Susan Collins (who also, by the way, sang on Ace Frehley's solo album in 1978). I am afraid I'm not familiar with Nancy O'Neill or Margaret Raymond.
