With the first gig of this year's tour not too far away - 2nd of August in Oakland - thoughts will be turning increasingly to what Jeff will pick. Given the conversation (or debate?) concerning Secret Messages, might he dare to perform Hello My Old Friend? Or indeed anything from SM, other than Rock And Roll Is King. Something came to mind last night, and that lead me to pick out Zoom to play track 9. Ordinary Dream isn't just an album track stuck away on ELO's forgotten masterpiece (my opinion - honest! ) Zoom has some rather mature lyrics. Ordinary Dream is just one of those 'mature' tracks. Once again, it's about the breakdown in a relationship. I have to say he's rather good at that sort of thing. From experience, perhaps... The slow, quiet, start builds towards a loud, almost chaotic, ending. It takes my breath away whenever I listen to it. I think it's magnificent - one of Jeff's best songs ever. Again - just my opinion. If that wasn't enough - he follows it with yet another nod towards his home town - A Long Time Gone. Yes, he has George (bless him) on lead guitar - but it's the words that last... Looked at the weeds in the broken concrete Before the bulldozers waltzed in and killed the old street You're a long time gone, long time gone Such a long time gone, long time gone Door steps that shone in a bright summer sky Lay shattered and wasted since our last goodbye Beautiful, heartbreaking, poetry. I hope that something from Zoom makes it to this years set list. If it's one of these two, it'll bring tears to the eyes of all present. *wipes tear away* I've had my say about that. Back to the real world...

Zoom doesn't rise to peak ELO magic, imo. But it's a very good album nonetheless. Lonesome Lullaby or Melting in the Sun are also set worthy. Moment is Paradise is also quite good - tho I'm not sure if Jeff's voice can still hit the high notes.
If only Jeff was 20 years younger and up for a 3 hour concert! Two 90 minute ELO sets with Dawes playing at intermission. That's my ordinary dream.
