Hi everybody!
We know that when Zoom was reissued in 2013 by Frontiers, it was remastered. The only missing track from the original tracklist was Long Black Road, the Japanese bonus track. I read once here that somebody asked if the American Hustle OST track was part of this remaster but not included on the reissue. Nobody said nothing so I looked for a digital version of it (I happen to love both the album and the song).
The original Zoom was mastered by Brian Gardner. The 2013 remaster was remastered by Bernie Grundman (or some mastering studio called Bernie Grundman Mastering). The thing is, the American Hustle OST was mastered by the same guy/team (and that very same year, so we can assume it was him/them for both events). So yes, we can assume that the Long Black Road remaster that should belong to 2013's Zoom is that one.
The BIG problem here is, THE TRACK IS IN MONO. Ok, not sure really, but if you compare the two versions —the original Gardner's master vs the Grundman's remaster— you'll immediately hear that what was before a stereo experience is now just like a 60s mono track. The rest of the OST is in stereo, though. 10538 Overture and Stream of Stars are in stereo.
To add more confusion, on Youtube, American Hustle's official Long Black Road's video has the STEREO version playing.
I wouldn't want to give fake news, so if anybody's able to get an original American Hustle CD and confirm my experience, it would be great.
Thank you!

You're not wrong - the copy of Long Black Road included on the American Hustle soundtrack was indeed wrongly released in mono, while the YouTube version is the correct stereo mix. I've no idea how this happened in the first place, but it's even more puzzling to think such a mistake has yet to be rectified. Maybe they'll get it right when the catalogue is next remastered, whenever that will end up being?

I hate these stupid errors, ELO deserves more than that. Like the Out of the Blue 2007 remaster. I'm going back to the previous master only to avoid those channel issues.

Could it be that the Youtube version is the original Gardner's master?

I've never looked closely at the YouTube version in a Wave editor myself, but it wouldn't surprise me if this is what Bernie Grundman remastered - I just can't imagine anyone preparing a dedicated mono mix at this point. If anything, the "mono" either comes from the stereo channels being accidentally folded down to one track or an incorrect setting being applied at some point during the whole process.
P.S. Most issues with the remastered Out Of The Blue from 2007 are quite easy to correct if you know how...

Wait, I'm in the dark here. What's wrong with the OOTB remaster?

Wait, I'm in the dark here. What's wrong with the OOTB remaster? Many things are awful. Like, on some songs one channel stops sounding or changes for some seconds. Listen to Night in the City with headphones. You'll see.
