That's nothing! I don't like -or, to be more accurate, I seriously dislike- "Turn to Stone", which according to most fans here is something even more sacrilegious. How come, that anybody dislikes "Turn to Stone" It was the first ELO song I ever heard and also the only ELO song I recognised in about 30 years. I loved it then and I still love it. I could drop maybe "Sweet Talking Woman" and maybe "Across The Border", too and include "Latitude 88 North", at least. And I would never touch the present "Concerto For a Rainy Day". I think it is perfect as it is; songs, sequence, everything.

Eliminate "Big Wheels?" NEVER!!!!!!! I like "Jungle" now, too, so that one's a keeper for me! Ditch "Starlight" and "The Whale" if anything. Wow eloneen, I'm so disappointed! Discard "The Whale"? Man, that's sad! Japanese ships disagree with you.

I'm not nuts about Turn To Stone either. Starlight, on the other hand, is sparkly and magical and wonderful.

Ok. I don't know what I've done here. I've cut Jungle which I love in order to create an album with 2 conceptual sides of 5 songs each.
First side: the orchestral side - an extended and slightly rearranged Concerto For A Rainy Day.
1. "Standin' in the Rain" 2. "Summer and Lightning" 3. "Big Wheels" 4. "Mr. Blue Sky" 5. "Believe Me Now"
Second side: Jeff ventures out into the world, falls in love in the disco age but comes to miss his home town.
6. "Steppin' Out" 7. "Night in the City" 8. "Sweet Is the Night" 9. "Starlight" 10. "Birmingham Blues"

I'm not nuts about Turn To Stone either. Are you making it public for the first time? Here, take my helmet and my shield, and don't forget to wear shin guards. If it's necessary I can also lend you my armour.

I understand why Jeff did a double album now.

Here is how I would make it a 12-song CD. And no contradictions on my previous assertion about "Turn to Stone". By making it the last song, I'm making it the finale of a masterpiece. It's the kind of song that belongs first, last, or right at the center, IMHO.
01. Jungle 02. The Whale 03. It's Over 04. Starlight 05. Night in the City 06. Sweet is the Night 07. Standin' in the Rain 08. Mr. Blue Sky 09. Across the Border 10. Birmingham Blues 11. Sweet Talkin' Woman 12. Turn to Stone

I have such great memories of this whole album, that being said, Starlight, Jungle, Night in the City, The Whale, and Sweet is the Night can be left off with no significant depreciation for me. Concerto for a Rainy Day should, and must be left in tact!

It’s always bothered me that Time ends with ‘Hold On Tight’ and SM with ‘Rock 'n’ Roll is King’ but that OOTB doesn’t end with ‘MBS’. For some reason adding the big singles to the ends of the former LPs is a bit predictable but not adding ‘MBS’ to the end of OOTB is just plain annoying seeing as it’s the “highlight” of both the LP and ELO’s career (if you believe the music press).
My idea of a 12 song OOTB has the four songs I'd like to start and end each side but in-between I've tried to imagine a concept album where Jeff despairs over having to stay indoors during a wet day. He goes to bed at night and dreams of many adventures including meeting lions, driving a fancy car, being a cowboy, performing in a band etc but as dawn comes, the rain has cleared and now he can go out into the world and complete these adventures for real.
Side One 1 Standin' In The Rain 2 Summer and Lightning 3 Sweet Is the Night 4 Jungle 5 Big Wheels 6 Wild West Hero
Side Two 7 Turn to Stone 8 Sweet Talkin' Woman 9 Believe Me Now 10 It's Over 11 Steppin' Out 12 Mr. Blue Sky
