There are so many cool, symbolic things on Alone in the Universe inside and out. I'm sure I'm missing half of them, including the lyrics. I've been puzzling over the picture of the woman with the guitar on the inside since I noticed it. What are the thoughts of the people in this esteemed forum? The first picture shows the placement on the inside of the gatefold and the second picture is a blowup of the picture itself. If any of you are on FB, I'm Pam VA. Attachments:

Hi Pam VA I have seen you on some of the Facebook pages good to have you here. As for the girl with the guitar picture I can’t think of any relevance at the moment, it’s like a vlogdance Christmas conundrum I’ll have to have a think.

It's a Vermeer painting called, who'd have guessed, Girl with a Guitar. There are some funny photoshops of it online, such as Here ends any useful contribution I might make to the discussion.

The girl in the picture kind of reminds me of a very young Sister Rosetta Tharp, who was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Her guitar style reminds me a little of Jeff's when he plays blues style. Attachments:

It is indeed "The Guitar Player" by Vermeer; a dutch painter noted for the utter realism of his works - indeed there is much speculation to this day about how his realistic paintings were achieved, many think he was a genius who used an early form of the camera to aid his work..

Well, that's half the mystery solved: what it's a picture of. Now we add it to the mystery of the classical paintings on the cover of Secret Messages.

Yes, babyzoomer. I believe it was called the "camera obscura" technique. But enough art history. Thanks for answering my question, you lot. What a bunch of brain power here!

But I wonder why It was selected for the inside cover, most of the other artefacts relate to something ELO or Jeff if I remember correctly.

The fire extinguisher from Mr. Blue Sky, his flame Les Paul, a mug that says "Elo," a picture from Birthday Party, and old timey radio, a tea service, the gold disc from Voyager II, a chamois cloth like you would use to wipe a guitar, and a phone with a stylus. All identifiable "Jeff" things. Oh, yes, the "10538" inscribed on the hull of the space ship as well. I'm not certain what this is either, though. Some kind of book. Attachments:
