I haven't asked this question for over 6 months; so here we go again.
Album : Zoom 1st song : Alright 1st line : The gold verandah in the dark has gone down to the metal man. Question : What the hell does it mean?
I presume "has gone down to the metal man" means sold for scrap; demolished.
But what is "The gold verandah in the dark"?
It's the first song of the first album (under the ELO moniker) for 15 years; you would think there is some significance. I suspect JL had been hanging around with Bob Dylan a bit much.
Any thoughts anyone?

I have always thought gone for scrap, may be with "in the dark" Jeff meant disappeared overnight without anyone noticing?

It's a great lyric.

It could mean that the gold has worn off the verandah, down to the cheap metal base. Probably deeply meaningful, ommm....

Sometimes, lyrics should be left open to interpretation.

You can't get more "open to interpretation" than 'nobody knows what the hell it means'!
