It seems Mike Mansfield must have produced the end of the video with the 70s split screen effects. Other than that the quality is very good. That bloke needs to be strung up (I know he's dead but he needs to be strung up) for what he did to the Wembley 78 show... I could hardly watch the thing.

The show is the pinnacle of ELOs career up to that point and like you say,it's unwatchable in places.

A left-handed bass player; how unusual... (or if you prefer) A bass player that's a 'bit thin on top'; how unusual...
They kept the bit where JL comes in late after the "turning to stone cause you ain't coming home" quick bit...

I hate when it's all cleaned up, as they did with Hyde Park.

I agree with unomusette etc; 'live' DVDs need the roar of the crowd etc, and also a few .. well 'bloopers' to give it artistic verisimilitude; (jeez I've waited years to use that quote from G&S) fortunately JL generally provides an ample supply of the second element.
And we love him for it!

I thought JL's voice sounded higher in the new video than it has in recent performances I've heard.

Jeff is SO not Helvetica nor any other kind of boring font. Atlantic Cruise is gorgeous and much more the style Jeff should have - elegant and vintage, just like the man himself.
I thought JL's voice sounded higher in the new video than it has in recent performances I've heard. The first time I saw Jeff live last year he started to sing and I had to have a look to see if it was somebody else singing. Jeff seemed to have a surprisingly sweet high and quiet voice live, nothing like he does on record. Naturally he must use his production skills to boost his recorded vocals.
I agree about Jeff's voice sounding great pushed right forward, but as a whole the audio is a bit polished, you can't hear much of the crowd except for the cheering at the end and it sounds quite isolated, like a studio take. I don’t remember hearing much from the crowd throughout apart from loud cheering in-between songs but then I was sat along the side, close to the front. Those in the centre would probably have the best idea of the sound atmosphere. I know I heard an awful echo at the back of the stadium and friend who was sat at the very top said the sound was extremely bad indeed.

From the 'Turn to Stone' clip it looks like the DVD is going to be every bit as good as we'd hoped. It seems really well-filmed and put together, like a real movie. I'm sure I didn't go to this show, did I? I was a little bit mad with the big black camera that stood between me and Jeff at the show but it looks like it was worth it in the end . The show on film looks nothing like how I imagined it to. It looks better but nothing like the show I remember seeing! I knew the stadium was big but from my own little corner of the venue I could not see how truly vast the audience was until I saw this clip. Had I known it looked like this I’d have been far more overawed. My experience and the film version look nothing like each other – at least from this one clip – but who wants a live experience and a DVD experience to be the same? My experience wasn’t the DVD experience because my experience was MY experience. Just as everybody there had their own experience. Thousands of separate little memories! They look like they are having so much fun on stage. It makes me so happy to see that. The filmmakers did a good job showing the effect of joy on the crowd. However as soon as I saw the split screen effect I went "Noooooooooo!" But I choose to see the effect as a reflection of the onstage screens rather than a Mike Mansfield tribute .

The cinematography is gorgeous, as is the sound. Can't wait to experience the Blu-Ray in it's full glory.

There's a new song from the Wembley DVD, Xanadu!

It feels strange hearing the recorded sound of that song rather than the live sound. It seems so different. One of my top tracks of the night.

For the tens of thousands of people who were present at this concert's recording, its official mix is so dry that you could be forgiven for thinking Jeff was playing in the Gobi Desert rather than Wembley Stadium... Thankfully whoever put this document together faded the crowd up near the very end!

Hiding under the chair at this point, but it sounds a bit auto-tuned

Hiding under the chair at this point, but it sounds a bit auto-tuned It seems to have been through all kind of processes, not just autotuning. What else could you expect from someone who hates musical spontaneity as much as Jeff Lynne does? His "live" versions end up being anything but live.

If it's true it's a shame as he genuinely does seem to have kept his voice in good shape. And why take the crowd sounds off most of it? How else would it sound live?
