With all the fuss and hype of today's singers and groups having the entire contents of their latest albums in the charts at the same time (thinking of Ed 'yawn' Sheeran here...) It seems incredible that OOTB was the first UK album to contain 4 top 20 singles on it, followed 18 months later by DISCOVERY that was the first album to contain 4 top 10 singles (5 if you count the double A single) here in the UK. I think it just shows how big ELO were at that moment in time, possibly the biggest band in the world .....

Whilst never wishing to detract from the achievement of ELO during this golden era - 'cause I soooo agree; nevertheless there is something here about the times - the industry was so concentrated and focussed; unlike today where the individual can access so easily any alternative music style that takes their fancy/rattles their cage.
Putting to one side the dalliance into soundtracks (which I contend has been a long-time aim for JL : afterall, a major contributor to the 'market penetration' of Eldorado was the tie-in with Dorothy's Movie) this golden era (like all highs) could not possibly continue; and JL had to try to negotiate the increasingly fragmented and unpredictable music scene of the 80's. All in all, I think he did pretty well. He was never a real 'media playa' in that sense; and I respect his continued love and involvement in MUSIC even when it no longer inhabited the heady world of spaceship stages and fawning groupies "crawling on their knees".
Jeez I must mix 'em a bit leaner........
