I was very sad to hear this news. www.theguardian.com/film/2017/jan/28/john-hurt-obituary
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4169878/John-Hurt-insecure-modest-says-Michael-Thornton.html
John Hurt was particularly special to me not only because he shared the same home town as me but also because he virtually brought me up. Every Sunday night after returning from my granddad's house I'd race to sit in front of the TV to watch the Storyteller.
If you are unfamiliar with this show, don't let the Muppet connection put you off. It's more Labyrinth than Sesame Street. Yes it's a Jim Henson production but the stories, the fairy tales, are written by Anthony Minghella and they are very, very dark. In fact I'm not sure a 5 year old should have been watching them and I'm surprised I didn't get nightmares. The whole thing fascinated me and from then on John Hurt would forever be the Storyteller to me and hold a special place in my heart.
The show is still perhaps the best thing I have ever experienced on TV and I still wish I could have that sarky pet dog of the Storyteller's for a pet!

RIP John, he was a proper actor who could inhabit different characters so you forgot it was him. Unlike certain others who are always themselves whatever parts they play.

Really loved John Hurt, very talented actor who could play a variety of roles. I grew up with some of his iconic roles such as Ollivander in Harry Potter, The Great Dragon in Merlin and more recently The War Doctor in Doctor Who! The 50th anniversary episode was one of the best episodes ever in my opinion, not only because my favourite Doctor David Tennant was in it but John just did a fantastic job playing another incarnation of The Doctor.
Not forgetting that John played a Brian Epstein character in Paul's music video for Take It Away
Macca of course was good friends with John (probably helped they were a similar age!)
Found this fantastic video of the many roles John took
My favourite part is from Spaceballs (where he parodies the character he took in the film Alien)
