Until now I'd been using a variation of the original promotional artwork, but now my homemade Secret Messages 3CD+DVD 30th Anniversary Edition box has a definitive cover - I've always wanted to know what Hag's original image looked like before all the classic art elements (and ELO references) were added... it sure didn't disappoint! Does anyone else feel this starker version of the final album sleeve concept would have made a fantastic single design for Hello My Old Friend, if only this hadn't been dropped from the tracklist? Would you be able to list the 3CD +DVD homemade discs just to see your selections ? I'm always thinking that 'if' it was ever re done what the ultimate content would be.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your request - I'll have to wait until I'm next at home so I can write up the exact contents of my homemade Secret Messages Legacy Edition straight from the digipak case (when travelling I just have my restoration of the 18 song double album sequencing in my phone playlist, complete with original cover artwork as seen in my profile picture).

ShardEnder,
You wouldn't happen to sleep in Secret Messages themed bed sheets every night, would you?

Ballbuster was the name on the original tape box for Grieg's Piano Concerto In A Minor, there is an unlisted hidden track - Danger Ahead [Alternate Mix] (3:53) - at the end of Disc 2, taken from side three of the Allen Zentz acetate set dated 4th March 1983, plus the exchange between Jeff Lynne and Bud Cort from Video! [Music Video Version] is included as an unlisted link track between Let It Run and Video! on Disc 3. Any titles written in italics indicate songs altered some way by "yours truly," usually to edit fades. However, a few are compiled from different sources, such as the double album treatment of Four Little Diamonds, which uses the Afterglow extended introduction cut into the single edit as included on Flashback to create what I feel is the definitive version, since the JET LX 527 mix actually segues into Stranger if you listen carefully enough. Similarly, both Stranger and Danger Ahead were once joined in this method, while I took some artistic license by having the opening finger snaps of No Way Out blend seamlessly with the repeated "never going back" lyric to Stranger, perhaps explaining why its introduction was previously edited slightly on Afterglow. Perhaps the biggest challenge was restoring the climax of Hello My Old Friend, though I won't bore you all with an explanation of how this was achieved yet again. On the other hand, quite a lot were mostly EQ or volume adjustments to match the quality of the material lifted directly from the 2001 remaster and Flashback to the best of my ability.
So, is anything significant missing from this collection... and would someone please let Rob Caiger know that I've done a better job than his own relatively lacking official 2CD proposal?

It begs the questions, what happened too the LP Vinyl Remasters? So far I have, Zoom, OOTB, Armchair Theatre, ANWR, Eldorado, No Answer.... all on reissue, but what about all the other LP's? ? Will we ever see them on 180gram Vinyl?

I'd love to see the other remastered ELO titles receive the vinyl treatment - it's the perfect format and opportunity to finally expand Secret Messages to its original length because the "double album" concept wouldn't be lost due to the full sequence fitting on a single CD.

I've not heard much about Rob since it was revealed a large portion of his archive went missing, and with Jeff's next album quite far into production I'm hoping we'll get more reissues to coincide with that... a follow-up to Long Wave containing all those other songs heard on the Down The Lane And Far Away sampler would definitely be a good start, plus an overdue DVD featuring all the classic era music videos!

Mr Caiger appears to have moved on to non ELO related projects recently ...hope that doesn't mean the end of the Idle Race box set.
A follow up to Long Wave would be great or a deluxe Long Wave reissue even, with the best of the Down the Lane songs ...wishing !!

Well done. I think you have everything there, even the Video tracks which would not be out of place. Some of the parts ie, the rock line interview I have never heard. It would be nice to get hold of the rehearsal tapes containing all the band members. I wonder, Rob C aside, that actually confronting Mr Lynne himself and letting him know how we all feel about SM
Well done Shard Ender.

the rock line interview I have never heard That can be fixed easily enough... www.elodiscovery.com/interviews/1983-rockline.mp3As for The Garden Rehearsals, we're highly unlikely to ever hear these now because of Jeff's policy against releasing anything that isn't 100% polished - let's not forget that he changed his mind about letting out a vintage demo for It's Over at the very last minute, which had been scheduled to appear on the Flashback boxed set. I'm guessing Rob Caiger must have at least heard something from those recordings when he first discovered them in the vault, but he did then "misplace" a considerable amount of the archive so it's possible these are now in the hands of a private collector who is keeping them as leverage to acquire more valuable ELO related items. Then again, with Beatles Forever already circulating, is there really anything left worth more? Apart from perhaps those Abbey Road pressed CDRs of leftover potential bonus tracks for the remasters (including the full Trojan Tapes Sessions, featuring such holy grails as Supersonic, Like A Rat Up A Drain and Give Me Fever/Black As A N...), there isn't particularly anything I'm more curious to hear apart from The Garden Rehearsals or maybe the early Secret Messages tracks recorded at Jeff's house. According to Richard Tandy, the best version of Hello My Old Friend was cut there, and I've always suspected that as a solo piece, Letter From Spain may also have come from that same period. If we assume the whole double album was tried out by the group along with the handful of known outtakes, an actual Legacy Deluxe Edition would need to have at least three discs, and that's without adding even a fraction of the songs my version contains! On that subject, I've added a track to my compilation. In For The Kill was recorded as part of the 1985 sessions for Balance Of Power, but lyrically it seems as if this was another idea salvaged from the previous album, with the verse about businessmen exchanging documents and shaking hands almost a word-for-word description of the original sleeve design. Then again, the guitar and drum machine sounds are very much like those used throughout the Wisseloord sessions, plus its known that Endless Lies was remixed in this way. Similarly, the songs Jeff recorded for the later Electric Dreams soundtrack fit better musically on Secret Messages than Balance Of Power, and it's common knowledge that Video! recycles elements from the chorus to Beatles Forever. As I've said before, Sooner Or Later is almost a precursor to the 1985-6 material in terms of its production style, so does this really qualify for inclusion? Apart from a minor reshuffle of the sequencing, I'm seemingly always changing my mind when it comes to what fits historically.

Thanks, I will try to get on the link a bit later. If nothing else ever surfaces I would like to hear/see your version somehow, someday. It would be good to see what the digi-pak looks like also. I presume you have a similar albeit extra disc for Time too and possibly BOP? Apart from the promos,a good recording of the Time tour and possibly all of the Heartbeat concert would need to be included.
