Yes, might be too young to understand discretion. In case Jeff doesn't remember have that photo of you all ready!
Tell the band you're ELO friends say hello.
Have a great time! Er, it's queenofthehours who's going, BSJ bach, not me! Not sure if Charlie T WilBeary will be accompanying Queen, though. Shuv and I will have to wait until they venture down our way. For gods sake! Sorry Queen!

Have a great time, queenofthehours. If you had a great time once, I can't see why it shouldn't happen again. I'm sure everything will be fantastic.

Charlie Trevelyan Wilbeary doesn't know if he's coming yet.
He sits by the top of my bed and, no word of a lie, two days ago he leaped onto my head in the middle of the night. I think he knows the show's imminent.

A little bit later than planned, here’s my Wilbury Tribute adventure 2018 – Stop reading if you don’t want spoilers!
Charlie T didn’t accompany me which was a good thing as it happens; more on this later.
On the way to the venue the taxi driver called the Wilburys “Roy Orbison’s backing group” which essentially I think is true. My dad called the band the “Wilbillies”.
Once you enter the venue the band have a stall set up manned by their tour manager. For sale there are CDs, pens, various t-shirts in various fun colours and bears. This year’s bears are different as the manager said she couldn’t get the ones with the little jumpers on anymore. There are also raffle tickets for sale, the prize being a signed Fender guitar. Of course I got tickets but not because I hoped to win, just for the sake of entering for fun and to support the band. This year the band have gone up in the world and incorporated a video backdrop. Maybe they have been following Jeff’s ideas? Anyway, before the start of the show and during the interval they showed a picture of Tom and the dates of his birth and death. It was all pretty emotional for a big Tom/Wilbury fan! The show started with a video of the group. The scene I remember most is somebody brushing “Jeff’s” hair/wig into a more Lynne-like style. I don’t know why but I found this very entertaining.
The group kicked off with ‘The Mighty Quinn’ with “Bob” centre stage. There’s just something quirky about George Harrison and Jeff Lynne playing guitar to this song and enjoying themselves as well. It appears “George” and “Jeff” have new wigs this year. They are quite obviously wigs but they are very good ones. Throughout the show I noticed that “Jeff” seemed to be the better guitarist of the two. False Jeff seemed to have more skill on display than even the real Jeff. I’m not saying real Jeff isn’t a guitar expert but false Jeff just had more chance to show off. “George” was good too but his skill lay in the slide. I must mention “Jeff’s” snazzy green guitar. It was beautiful.
All the usual expected tunes were played from the two Wilbury LPs – ‘Runaway’, ‘Last Night’, ‘She’s My Baby’, ‘Wilbury Twist’, ‘Rattled’, ‘Not Alone Anymore’ and ‘Heading for the Light’. Each member got to sing their own songs - ‘Here Comes the Sun’, ‘My Sweet Lord’, ‘Got My Mind Set On You’ for George, ‘Pretty Woman’, ‘You Got It’, Only the Lonely’ and ‘I Drove All Night’ for Roy. They played ‘ROB’ too, mentioning that the track had been sung by both George and Jeff. Roy announced that tonight the singer would be Jeff. “Roy”, despite being no match for the real Lefty, was very good and had great warmth as a host (he did basically all of the talking in the show).
After the interval they continued with an acoustic section lead by “Bob”. Now, my only problem with “Bob” is that he still reminded me greatly of Bruce Springsteen. I think it was the bandana. The guy was just too enthusiastic to be a Bob! But he was still a tremendously good musician (from Sheffield! “Tom” was from Harrogate and “Jeff” from Leeds). “Bob” led the band with ‘Nobody’s Child’ and ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’. Later he performed ‘Tweeter and the Monkey Man’ to a very impressed audience. This might have been the highlight of the show had ‘Runnin’ Down a Dream’ not blown everyone’s socks off. This was indeed an event not even the real Tom could have replicated. It was a magnificent performance and the cheers at the end were the loudest of the night. “Tom” also performed ‘Free Fallin’’ that night.
‘Handle with Care’ and ‘End of the Line’ were performed towards the end of course and “Jeff” got to play ‘MBS’ (with vocoder) and ‘Sweet Talkin’ Woman’, which I was very glad about as every note was a joy. Now, the video screen was utilised very well, there was a video to accompany each song. ‘MBS’ depicted space themes so perhaps the band had been paying attention to Wembley or Bust. One mishap was putting up the name of Tom’s Full Moon Fever as Blue Moon Fever but that’s an understandable mistake given the liberal use of blue in the Lynne-world. I thought “Tom” was the best in the band. “Buster” was great also, a super musician. “Jeff” had Discovery hair on a AITU body but that was fine. The false Jeff I thought had the better voice than the real one only because he was louder and the real Jeff has a thin voice live. My favourite stage talk of the night was when “Roy” told everyone about the old lady who liked “Mr Sunshine” aka ‘MBS’ and that “George” was a ‘Dark horse’ – a joke no one but two people got.
Halfway through the second half of the night the raffle was drawn. Guest who won? Me! I couldn't believe it was the winning ticket until nobody else owned up.
Here is a picture -
This is why it was a good thing Charlie did not attend because carrying a small bear and a guitar would not be easy. In fact I did feel a bit odd toddling off at 10pm through town to the taxi cab office carrying a boxed guitar on a Friday night. I felt not unlike one of those drunks getting into a cab with a street sign or traffic cone. Although the guitar was signed by all the band I got "Roy" and "Bob" to sign the box too.
I picked up a leaflet at the show announcing a Wilbury Festival! Really. It’s in Rotherham in October.
The problem with the real Jeff’s shows is that every time any of us goes to one we will naturally criticise it. Why didn’t he play this or that? Why doesn’t he chat more? Etc etc But with the false Wilburys that will never happen because they do play everything you desire and they don’t have the weight of thousands of fans on their shoulders. These guys are a dream come true. I’m sure if Bob, Jeff, Roy etc. ever had played live then we would have pulled them (lovingly) to pieces but this band cannot be criticised at all. They are a fan’s band. The most important aspect is that when you go to one of their shows you are in the company of people who love the same things you do.

Thanks for the review! That's fantastic about winning the guitar! Wow! Do you play?

queenofthehours , I had a sneaky suspicion when reading about you buying a raffle ticket that you won that beautiful guitar! (I always reduce the window making long posts easier to read, having to scroll down more. I'm glad I do this!) Interesting and fun review. You don't miss a thing. Always good insights about our Jeff, too. Was there a large crowd? When do the guitar lessons start? Charlie can be your producer one day.

Another sparkling review from queenofthehours, sounds like another epic gig from this band and you describe it perfectly. Loads and loads of songs too, how long were they on for? And to win the raffle on top of all that, how marvellous! It was a lovely (or even a wilbury) twist for me, I was totally not expecting such a development. Do you play? Even if you don't you can take some awesome pics of yourself posing with the guitar, jolly well done. And you probably won because you bought tickets for the right reason. Bravo!

Sounds like a fantastic show, Queen, how brilliant that you won the guitar!
That's so nice that they included a special tribute to Tom.
Now I want to go and see them again. Especially now Jeff has a snazzy green guitar.
Are this year's bears as cute as Charlie T and Shuv?

Queenofthehours! How amazing! What a gorgeous red strato you won, you lucky girl! And with the band's sticker! Chuffed for you. Now you've got to learn and play it, it's a wink of destiny so you can't say no.
Great and entertaining write up of the Wilbury tribute band again, given the previous experience it was hard to think they could have disappointed, but I think this time the guitar thingy totally stole the show.
