Tommy was Liverpools goalie just as they started to make it big in the 60s early 70s,he was replaced by Ray Clemence who sadly died last year.

When I have time and I'm in the mood I navigate randomly through Wikipedia pages, and today I got to this one... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentina%E2%80%93England_football_rivalry...so I was interested in knowing your opinion as English football fans (Horace, Timeblue and anyone else? Though of course anyone else can have a say) how do you feel about this rivalry, if you even consider it to be one. Do you consider Argentina to be England's rival -you know, that special opponent towards whom there's a particular animosity which makes it special-? Or is it just another team for you? Also, whom do you consider to be England's biggest rival when it comes to football?

Also, whom do you consider to be England's biggest rival when it comes to football? I think the press build things up more than anything but the two teams I think England have the biggest rivalry with are Germany and Argentina (and maybe Scotland). The press would try to say it’s because of the history of wars but I think it’s more about the history of the football games we have played together and the various controversial things which have happened in these games.

I always see Germany and Scotland as the main rivals too but since the Falklands war, any Argentina game has had a little more spice to it. Was it Simeone who got Beckham sent off 20 years ago? that also made the fixture a little more interesting too.

I see, thanks for your opinions. They are coincident with what I read on a British forum just after I posted this question. Most people mentioned the same three teams you guys mentioned, and in that order: Germany, Argentina and Scotland (though some argued that because of England's superiority over Scotland it didn't feel like a rivalry game for them). www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1318598Yeap, it was Simeone. Then Argentina won that game on PKs, and the following World Cup England had its revenge when Poch took down Owen and Beckham scored the PK for England's win. Those two games contributed to spicing things up too (no pun intended ). What would make it particularly interesting is that it would be the only transcontinental football rivalry in the world. All of the rest are within the same continent.

You won't be surprised that Argentinian shirts (and now Italian) are quite popular in Wales...my son has both...Actually come to think of it he has a German one too .

I remember Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa playing for Spurs when the conflict broke out and both went home fearing reprisals. When it was apparent that nothing of the sort was going to happen, they both returned to much love from the English footballing world.

Absolutely lasttrain929! That World Cup was when I 'came of age' with football. Back in 74 I HATED the almost wall-to-wall coverage of the WC that year. By 78 I was transformed! I suppose I should've supported fellow Celts Scotland, but a team in light blue and white stripes caught my eye. I was as nervous as anything waiting for the result of the Peru game. That competition, the venues with beautiful names like Rosario and Cordoba... That was my World Cup watershed moment

Sounds like any team that's a rival to England is a good enough reason to buy the jersey. lasttrain929 : by ticker tape you mean the paper rolls and pieces that people threw to the air when celebrating a victory or when the team was coming out to the field? I think it was created during that World Cup, wasn't it? tremblinwilbury , nice to hear your story. I wonder what in the Argentina team got you hooked? I expect most Europeans were cheering for that great Holland team (or, well, the remnants of it... even minus Cruyff and Van Hanegem they were good enough to almost win the WC), but it's nice to know we had a few supporters across the Atlantic. Apparently you weren't the only one...

It was Helmut, was an amazing sight when the team came out. My local football team played in light blue and white stripes and the supporters would chant Argentina, Argentina when they came out.
