I think that it's often lazy journalism. But it's also to a degree Jeff's fault. He gives so little away in interviews or say's the thing that he thinks people want to hear that they are left with little left to write.

I completely agree with nickheynes , I was going to say something about lazy journalism too. It's not just poor old Jeff who gets this treatment, the press seem to look for an influence to pin on most artists who come to the fore, it's stuck to them from an early stage and no matter how that artist might grow or change the same dusty old comparisons are always dragged into every interview

Aren't you guys a bit tired of people bringing up the Beatles when talking about ELO? I mean, just because that phrase of Jeff and Roy Wood about "taking over where the Beatles had left after Walrus" when the band had just started? What do the Beatles have to do here? Is anyone ever going to give Jeff credit for his work without mentioning other artists with whom he has worked? Absolutely. And first of all, I'm a Beatles fan. But we should start to talk about the Beatles constantly bringing up the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Carl Perkins and all the hell of artists whose work make them possible. I'm fed up of reading about that famous Lennon statement on Showdown and the famous bit about ELO starting where the Beatles left at I am the Walrus or wherever the f__k. But I promise not to get angry any more. My wife is not an ELO fan nor a Beatle fan, she prefers other sort of music and she's fully unaware of all these discussions. When I made her listening When I was a boy, she said, "yeh, it's nice....and sounds like the Beatles". I give in.

Just in case: I'm a huge Beatles fan as well.
It's just that Jeff Lynne did his own thing, even when you can hear some Beatles' influence in a few parts of a few of his songs.

Didn't Jeff say in an interview that 10538 is the only song where he feels they were trying to do that "carrying on where Beatles left off" bit? I think he himself said it was daft for people to say that about any other ELO songs.
My other point is, Beatles were absolute masters of melody. And so is His Jeffness!! I think any top ELO song will appear Beatley to many, simply because of magnifenct melodies.

I also think that the fact of knowing about Jeff's admiration for the Beatles and subsequent relationship with 3 of them plays in people's heads. When you know that beforehand it's easy to believe, consciously or subconsciously, that everything you hear from this artist has Beatles written all over it. The ELO songs in which I can clearly hear Beatles' influence are: - Mr. Kingdom (because it's so similar to "Across the Universe") - Hello My Old Friend (I find it similar to "I am the walrus") - Oh, no, not Susan I'm sure I'm forgetting about one or two, but in any case, I'm talking about only a handful ofsongs in a career of 14 studio albums (one of them double). And if you asked me about the new album, I think nothing on it sounds like the Beatles, not even close.

I've always thought that The Diary of Horace Wimp was their most Beatley number. Yes, "The diary of Horace Wimp" and it's twin sister "Mr. Blue Sky" have a feel to several songs from Sgt. Pepper ("With a little help from my friends", "Getting Better", "Lovely Rita", "Fixing a hole", etc...) IMO, particularly in the rhythmic aspect.

So when our man Jeff does a comeback he does it in a big way. All the sold out shows in the UK, The Hollywood Bowl, a Super Bowl ad!! Hopefully more US dates to come. I guess I shouldn't be surprised but I'm so satisfied about it!! After years if having to explain who Jeff is to people! Way to go Jeff!!!
