Casey Kasem's American Top 40 - The 80's from September 5th, 1981, is on this weekend, the last time British rock group ELO were in the countdown they went to #8 with Xanadu, a co-hit with Olivia Newton-John, now here's their current hit, moving up 3 to #18, Hold On Tight, ELO... After hearing "Hold on Tight" on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 Mighty 690 AM Radio Show back in Summer 1981 while with family around Ventura, California, a U.S. Route 101 road trip to Santa Barbara's Mission when I was just 8 years old, Dad then bought me my very first Electric Light Orchestra album from Tower Records, an audio cassette of Time by ELO, thus started the fandom 39 years ago!

Today, heard of a book called Strange Stars in which the author, Jason Heller, discusses the influence of science fiction on '70s music. Searched the text and found our heroes are mentioned twice. The first, in the chapter on 1973: The next, in the chapter on 1977:

I'm watching Biography: I Want My MTV on A & E about the development of music television. According to the show, the video they used to sell the idea of a rock music channel to the suits at Warner Communications was Olivia Newton John singing "Xanadu."
Also on Biography: Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne, while discussing Sharon's tour management days, they flashed a photo of the Magnificent Seven.

I’m up in Vermont for a short vacation and my favorite local radio station here is called The Point. They play a very eclectic mix - for example this morning on the way to the golf course they played Don’t Bring Me Down followed by the new song from 21 Pilots “Level of Concern”. Nice to hear ELO mixing right in with the latest alternative music.

I heard Sweet Talkin' Woman playing in Walgreens yesterday! ...Someone remind me to not visibly freak out excited over hearing the instantly-recognizable first note of an ELO song, while in public...

On Radio 2 this morning, DJ Gary Davies (standing in for Ken) was asking listeners to send in their stories about times they'd been involved in a world record attempt. Among the proud recollections, one bloke wrote in with: "I had a new world record in 1976, Gary. It was by ELO..." (Was this you, Horacewimp? Possibly encouraged by Gus?)

A bit like the time when I went for a job interview, I was asked if I had a police record.....

Also on that same Ken Bruce show this week, James Dean Bradfield of The Manic Street Preachers chose Wild West Hero as one of his Tracks of My Years. I was so proud of him, sniffle.

Tonight BBC4 will be showing "Top Of The Pops 1978 - The Big Hits" at 8pm.
A certain ELO song will be on the playlist. No, not The Battle Of Marston Moor.
