Panic at the Disco! were known for their emo anthems, but they also stepped into ELO/Beatles territory with songs like Nine in the Afternoon.

1967 original by Denny Laine - a little like Idle Race 1972 remake by Colin Blunstone - violin and cello like ELO

haha - the falsetto at 1:23 (Denny Laine version) etc. sounds very idle-race-like. I just don't know which specific song it reminds me of (going home ? come with me? Mr Crow..?). And the question is also, who was inspired by whom?

Shameless self promotion but at moments I felt I channeled some 70's ELO vibin going on.

been on a bit of a fountains of Waynes trip since thinking about them the other day ...always good to hear this stripped down approach, this was a b side to sink to the bottom with you single.

Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo has some very definite ELO/Jeff Lynne-like chord changes and melodic turns. I don't think Jeff ever used the term "famefucker" in a song, though.

Thanks! I will give your playlist a listen. I'm a big fan of World Party and XTC.

I watched the movie Saltburn, last night (a complete mindf**k, but pretty good), and Murder on The Dancefloor by Sophie Ellis-Bextor was featured in the wild closing scene. Definite shades of Discovery era ELO on this one.

Definite shades of Discovery era ELO on this one. Written by Gregg Alexander (New Radicals), many of his songs do have have a late 70s ELO feel and like Jeff you can alway tell when a song has been written/produced by Gregg Alexander. Another similarity is that like Jeff, Gregg is known for his reclusive nature, hates touring and just loves spending his time in the studio.

I didn't know he wrote Murder on the Dancefloor.
