My surname is famous in Toledo because of ancestors who, around 1860, immigrated from Germany and bought a boat load of land to farm. Through the years they opened the first grocery and bar, that the family lived over for a time, and gas station in the area. The land was sold off piece-meal. There's a corner, a street and school named after us. Still standing is a house my ancestor who opened the bar lived in, with his growing family. I have early photos, worked on their history and family tree.
Here's a photo taken at the "Wernert's Corners" intersection as it's known in town (5 streets merge and rush hour can be a horror show. One of the streets is an old Indian path that travels into Michigan.)

Thank-you, Vlog, I am proud. The main reason I didn't change my last name when I married Dave. I'm a WERNERT!

There's plenty of very famous musicians from Buenos Aires but the English speaking world doesn't consume much music in Spanish as it happens viceversa so I'm afraid you wouldn't know them. People you might be familiar with, for good or bad, are:
- Diego Maradona (footballer) - Pope Francis (welp... pope) - Máxima Zorreguieta (queen of the Netherlands) - Gabriela Sabatini (tennis great) - Roberto de Vicenzo (golf great) - Many other football greats like Sergio Agüero, Carlos Tévez, Diego Simeone, Javier Zanetti, the list is neverending.

Helmut, apart from the golfer and the queen of the Netherlands Ive heard of all those. Vlogdance - Blaenavon - heard of the town not the band. However, I went down that rabbithole. They are from Hampshire, good songs, I like them. interestingly they got the name from a box of t-shirts, one of which said Welcome to Blaenavon (seeing it, like it though it was a pretty word (meaning river?). they didn't even know how to pronounce it when they adopted it This whole thread has shown me how little I know about US Sports .... I don't think I could not name one American Football, Basketball or Baseball player. It is a world completely alien to me, which is odd given how have expertly US networks have exported entertainment around the world.

orioles70 Whoa! I remember Steve "Wojo" Wojciechowski, and I'm not even a sports fan! Aside from feeling old, I'm pretty impressed with myself, actually! Living for 30+ years in a college basketball crazed region like central NC, I guess you just pick up certain things by osmosis! dillwyn Don't worry, the sports names (from anywhere in the world) are pretty much hit or miss for me, too, unless they are major international legends or local celebrities/heroes !

Gabriela Sabatini, I remember very well. She, Steffi Graff, Mary Pierce, Mary Jo Fernandez, Monica Selles and Lindsey Davenport, were other top players in the same time frame. Incredible tennis.

Gabriela Sabatini, I remember very well. She, Steffi Graff, Mary Pierce, Mary Jo Fernandez, Monica Selles and Lindsey Davenport, were other top players in the same time frame. Incredible tennis. What an era of women tennis that was! The best probably. The Spaniard Arantxa Sánchez Vicario was also there battling with all those you mentioned. Gaby Sabatini suffered a lot during a long time because of her sexuality, until she finally made peace with it and seemed happier. I'm glad because by all accounts she's a good person. Funnily enough, she's close friends with Steffi Graff.

Helmut, apart from the golfer and the queen of the Netherlands Ive heard of all those. Wow, I'm surprised! Although when you think of it, you are a big football fan and those players made a good part of their careers in Europe, included some at the Premier League. I know you are not a big fan of royals (neither am I), but here's a picture queen of the Netherlands (alongside the king). She's from Pergamino, a small city I visit all the time since my family has land very close to it. This whole thread has shown me how little I know about US Sports .... I don't think I could not name one American Football, Basketball or Baseball player. It is a world completely alien to me, which is odd given how have expertly US networks have exported entertainment around the world. Same here. The Mannings (whom eloneen mentioned) are three of 5 or 6 American Football players I know. Baseball players, I don't think I even know one. But do you think US networks have done such a good job of marketing their sports around the world? Down here no one gives a damn about American football, baseball and ice hockey. The only one of their sports some people care about is basketball, but that's because Argentina has a basketball culture of its own. Are American sports big in Europe?

I'm sorry, Timeblue, you have no chances: she's into women. The epigraphe of the photo you shared: "we Argentinians are known for being loud".

They have been so good at marketing music/tv and film and so poor at marketing sports. Mind you the sports seem all about tv adverts and seem break every few minutes to allow for a word from their sponsors . There is a ice hockey team in Cardiff and that whole league has a solid following that is small but perfectly formed. I'm sure my lack of knowledge is equivalent to me quoting a Rugby/Cricket players name (probably known in many countries but not the US)

A few interesting characters were born in Chesterfield including Princess Diana's butler, the Chief Guide Olave Baden-Powell and Francis Frith (he of photography fame). There's Charles Paxton Markham (grandson of Joseph Paxton, designer of the Crystal Palace) whose company made tunneling machines for the Channel Tunnel and London Underground and George Stephenson (of railway fame) who lived and died in town despite being born in Northumberland. The house where Stephenson died became the Markham family home.
For music there's Nick Cave's bassist, Mororhead's drummer and Blair Dunlop, folk singer, son of Ashley Hutchings (Fairport Convention) and played little Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's film.
In acting there's Jeremy Kemp and John Hurt.
Sports stars include Geoff Miller the cricketer and England selector, Harry Maguire (only passing through), Fred Davis (eight time World Snooker Champion) brother of Joe Davis (15 times World Champion who was born nearby) -
Not forgetting Bob Wilson - Anchorman -

Musical geniuses from my town include the group 'Child' who made the top 10 in 1978 with Its Only Make Believe. Also, Jane Mcdonald ( ) was born about 5 miles away...
