Does anyone on here have any famous people (can be anybody who is generally known to the world) from their hometown? My home town is Castleford in West Yorkshire,England and we are blessed with having two famous people who were born here, Henry Moore who was probably the most famous sculptor of the 20th century (who I once met whilst at school) and Viv Nicholson the pools winner who famously said "I'm going to spend, spend, spend!" (and she did...)
Over to you!

Toledo, Ohio: I went Wikipedia to make sure I didn't miss anyone and was shocked at the number of "known" names in music, sports, political, etc that were born here. These are the known names: Gloria Steinem - Icon of the women's rights movement. Anita Baker - R&B singer.
Gene Kranz: NASA's second Chief Flight Director, directed Gemini and Apollo programs, and the first lunar landing mission, Apollo 11.
Tom Scholz - Founder of the band Boston.
P. J. O'Rourke - Political writer. Art Tatum - Pianist, Jazz musician - world famous He and members of his band, who came back to live, created a world renown Jazz scene here. I remember back in the 80's going to a downtown Jazz club called, Murphy's, hearing some of those old boy masterful musicians who would blow into town for the night, or who lived here, and meeting people from other countries, or US cities.
Danny Thomas - TV star of his own show in the 50's.
Jamie Farr - MASH TV show. For years he hosted a yearly golf tournament here. The party he hosted the night before the tournament was quite the to-do to go to. He'd dragged in mostly "B-C" stars to play a round of golf (all for charity, of course) and mingle at dinner. The entertainment was pretty good. One year Don Henley of the Eagles did an after dinner set.
Mildred Benson - Wrote the Nancy Drew series.
Katie Holmes - Actress, married Tom Cruse.

Terrific Thread Timeblue... Henry Moore very impressive. New Orleans in itself feels like a famous person creator of jazz and all that. That is some list isn't it Louis Armstrong and Fats Domino Toledo - again another good list, you missed weezer's bassist - Scott Shriner
I originally come from a small area called Neath-Port Talbot.. a strong industrial-mining area. Interesting list of notables (sport /politics all feature) but would probably be known in the uk more internationally famous people you may have heard of .... Actors - Richard Burton, Ray Milland, Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheen Singers - Katherine Jenkins, Bonnie Tyler and Soprano Rebecca Evans

Ha! Beg Scott my forgiveness. I just want to add there are a handful of inventors that made the wilds of Toledo the Glass Capital of The World.
Quite the list of actors you have.

There is a road with the same name as my real surname in Sutton, we once viewed a house there that was for sale but didn’t purchase it, the only statues we have are of important people from the Industrial Revolution

My home town is Blaenavon in Gwent, South Wales. Only a small town, so we can't compete with the rest of you, sigh... although we have produced a couple of Welsh rugby internationals. But we do have a rock band who named themselves after us! *looks proud*. And they're not even from the town. What's that you were saying about music legends, Horacewimp ? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaenavon_(band)

first I had to decide which town (where I was born, where I grew up, where I've lived the longest?) I chose Severna Park, Maryland (4th grade through High School).
"famous" people from a small town that didn't really merit a dot on the map until the 1950s Steve Bisciotti (Baltimore Ravens football team owner) - I actually played basketball with him a few times as a teen. He never passed the ball. The Sajak family (Pat, Lesly and Maggie). Pat is the Wheel of Fortune host and married a girl from my hometown. Robert Duvall - actor, including in one of my all time favorite films, True Grit Steve Wojciechowski - point guard for a good but not great Duke team and went on to a coaching career Mark Teixeira - major league baseball player who spurned the Orioles and went to the hated Yankees instead
