A few interesting characters were born in Chesterfield including Princess Diana's butler, the Chief Guide Olave Baden-Powell and Francis Frith (he of photography fame). There's Charles Paxton Markham (grandson of Joseph Paxton, designer of the Crystal Palace) whose company made tunneling machines for the Channel Tunnel and London Underground and George Stephenson (of railway fame) who lived and died in town despite being born in Northumberland. The house where Stephenson died became the Markham family home. For music there's Nick Cave's bassist, Mororhead's drummer and Blair Dunlop, folk singer, son of Ashley Hutchings (Fairport Convention) and played little Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's film. In acting there's Jeremy Kemp and John Hurt. Sports stars include Geoff Miller the cricketer and England selector, Harry Maguire (only passing through), Fred Davis (eight time World Snooker Champion) brother of Joe Davis (15 times World Champion who was born nearby) - Wasn't Gordon Banks (or Peter Shilton?) born in your hometown? I seem to recall you said so, but I could be wrong. Ah, the "snooka"! Good times!

His son plays the drums in Pulp.
