Has anyone read 1984? I keep meaning to but I have the feeling I'll come away depressed, which is not something I aim for usually. Masterpiece. But "Animal Farm" is my fav Orwell book

I started reading Animal Farm when I was a teenager and put it down when I realised it wasn't just an amusing farm-based book. I TOLD you I was shallow.
It's funny how you can enjoy some books which have secret messages just for the story. For instance I read and re-read Watership Down from when I was about 11 and it only struck me that it had political undertones when I was about 14. Same goes for all the Narnia books and the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings collection. But Animal Farm hit me straight away as propaganda and it lost its appeal before the end.
Give me a nice Lee Child or Terry Pratchett book these days, I want to be entertained, not preached at.

Just watched Paul Rogers and co (Free) on top of the pops '70. They rocked....this has strengthened my case on how things are now crap. I have been subjected to the mental, emotionally wrecking, audio tormenting onslaught that is Katy Perry/Lady gaga from my 10 year old daughter. I have decided that I should have been born in 1950....time to catch Marti Mcfly when he buzzes in in June '15....oh Yes just came on with Roundabout! !! This has concreted my thoughts!!!!!

My kids like Boney M, The Wurzels and *whispers* Rolf Harris. Endlessly. They're "special needs" and now in their 20's so you can imagine how LONG I'VE HAD TO SUFFER!!!! Even though the eldest has moved out and the youngest is at college as soon as they visit home or get in the car it all begins again, arrghhhh!

I think you have safely won the argument. Horace and I will stand well back! I have a special needs child "aspergers syndrome" so its video game and repeating "movie lines" back to me constant. But as a music nazi I cannot bear the idea of "the worzles, Rolf Harris" maybe you can imagine the is "internment by your queens request" as payment of so many years or suffering his bullsh*te dulcet, warbling, board wobbling, didgeridoo nonsense.?

Aha, yes mine are somewhere on the aspergers spectrum I think, but also slow developers generally. I'm right there with you on the endless repetition of things, jefflynnenut. And to explain Rolf Harris a bit for BSJ - hugely popular in the '70's for quirky/Australian songs, bit of a kids' TV personality and quite a good painter, he even painted The Queen. Last year he was jailed for sexual abuse of girls, including one of his daughter's friends, going back years and years. Massive fall from grace, along with a lot of other similar personalities from that era, more keep getting arrested and exposed all the time. Bit like Bill Cosby in the US at the moment? My kids got into his songs well before that though, we just pretend we've lost the CD most of the time. Bit awkward if people hear them blaring out of the car for instance.

A nephew was born with a bit of his brain out of his skull. His primal kicked in with his sight, they have no idea how he see's. His eyes are dead looking, doesn't react to light. Has Cerebral Palsy. He's now late 30's, over 6ft tall and has the mind of a 5 year old. He has some "Rainman" qualities. He watches the news and can talk politics with intelligence. He won't use the phone, so need to ask through my brother, whom I should vote for and why. Has to watch the same shows, over and over. He's been raised with a brother and sister helping his sense of humor and understanding teasing. Some woman came up to my Sister-in-Law in a store and told her she should put him away somewhere! Mike, understanding what was said, carried on for days that they were going to get rid of him. You read Uno how cats are attracted to Dave. Mike is as well. Dave is a very calm, gentle person and Mike zeros in on him and wants to be next to Uncle Dave. Not me! and I'm his flippin' godmother!!

Damn, if I I were your sister in law I'd look for the highest crossbeam in the store and I'd hang that idiot woman there tied from her hair. What an imbecile.
But then again, if I were your sister in law I probably wouldn't have the strength of a man to do that.
