Apparently,"Sugar Baby Love" by The Rubettes was originally written as a Eurovision song contest entry but was then offered to Showaddywaddy and Carl Wayne, who both turned it down.

I'm glad The Rubettes did it, the others wouldn't have had Paul da Vinci do that amazing falsetto part. It's a really perfect pop song.

I always thought Alan Williams mimed it really well, it was a surprise to me when I found out it was someone else entirely. Not sure about Tonight, guessing that was Paul too and they recorded it at the same time as Sugar Baby Love. The Rubettes had some right bangers, remember Juke Box Jive?

I still have the single, great start with the drums.

I looked it up on Wikipedia, it doesn't mention that Paul sang on Tonight so maybe Alan W did it. He couldn't join the band when SBL became a hit because he'd already signed somewhere else.

I think Alan sang lead on Tonight, there is a distinct difference between the two of them imo. Maybe Alan had lessons after SBL!

Sorry for straying from the subject already, but Timeblue got me thinking of my first record Muds, Tiger Feet. Would love to hear others first record purchased. Rob Davis the lead guitarist here went on to write quite a few well known songs like kylie Minogues Can’t get you out of my head.
