1st record that I can remember buying with my own money was...... The Arsenal 1st team squad - Good Old Arsenal in 1971. I was only 7 if that's any excuse....

I’m puzzled at this one Timeblue, were you a gooner once!!!! I remember my mate who was a year or two older was an Arsenal fan and I copied him like you do. It was soon after though I changed allegiance to LFC and he started supporting Leeds!

Always really loved the Rubettes. When 'Sugar Baby love' came out it made a big impact and was obviously a number one song. Although I love that song, I'd say my favourite is their very last UK hit....(I think), 'Baby I know'. I think it's a great song and those harmonies are absolutely sublime. It's got a slightly different vibe and I think it's beautiful. There's also some nice guitar work.

Baby I Know was during their 'Country' period and was indeed their last hit,and one of their very best. Interesting too that it was sung by Tony Thorpe rather than Alan Williams, who left soon after and had further chart success (dubiously!) with his band The Firm in 1982 with Arthur Daleys (E's Alright) and Star Trekkin' in 1987!

Gasp-o-mundo! I never knew Alan Williams was in The Firm, what a scoop! Nothing dubious about Star Trekkin' it's a total classic My first record buy was Wild West Hero but shortly before that my auntie gave me Wuthering Heights for my birthday

Ahh, well it's still news to me that anyone from the Rubettes was in The Firm so you've still taught me something

Tony Thorpe, (the guy singing) plays some sumptuous, delicate lead guitar. I think their musical talent really shows on this song. It must be almost impossible to do harmonies as perfect as what we hear on this track. I never knew they had a country period.

Just been reading that there are now three versions of The Rubettes. Up until recently there was almost the complete line up with Alan Williams, John Richardson (drummer) and Mick Clarke (bass) from the golden days and Bill Hurds Rubettes (Bill was one of the keyboardists) BUT it seems that singer Alan Williams has left and formed his own version of the band, confused? interesting to note too was Bill Hurds Rubettes at one point contained Paul da Vinci as lead singer.....

I always associate Alan Williams as the front man, shame they can’t keep the original line up......
